ADHD and the menopause – what’s your experience? 🤔 October marks ADHD Awareness Month, World Menopause Awareness Month, and World Menopause Day (Oct 18th), making it a crucial time to talk about how these two intersect. Many women experience the onset of perimenopause or menopause while also navigating the challenges of undiagnosed or late-diagnosed ADHD. The overlap in symptoms can make it easy to miss ADHD altogether. Common symptoms include: 🤔 Forgetfulness 😴 Poor sleep 😟 Brain fog 😠 Mood swings 🥱 Fatigue Sound familiar? These are key symptoms of both ADHD and menopause, which can make diagnosis tricky. WHY IT MATTERS: ❎ ADHD is often overlooked in women, as it's historically linked to boys. ❎ Women with ADHD already have lower dopamine levels. ❎ When oestrogen drops during menopause, it affects dopamine and can worsen ADHD symptoms like focus, emotional regulation, and memory. Don’t forget to talk to your healthcare provider about getting the right treatment, including considering HRT as a priority for managing menopause symptoms.
