Vodafone & Three UK Merger: Is Approval Still on Track? An excellent write-up from Kester Mann at CCS Insight regarding the proposed merger between Vodafone and Three UK. Link in the comments 👇 It has been a year since the announcement and remains a hot topic in the industry. Many arguments have been made, and many concerns have been raised, but where does the deal stand now? Among other topics, Kester examines the role of MVNOs in the proposed deal. Will the deal affect the ability of MVNOs to achieve competitive wholesale terms from the remaining operators? Will the Competition and Markets Authority impose a remedy to divest spectrum to a telco player to become a competitive fourth market player? Presumably, this second remedy would be to one of the existing MVNOs that has scale. But who? Tesco Mobile, Virgin Media O2, giffgaff and BT Group, with BT Mobile, are some of the more prominent players and account for roughly 70% of MVNO subs in the market. However, given that their ownership structures are existing telcos with spectrum, I would suggest they are off the table. iD Mobile from Currys plc comes to mind. I’m not sure Lyca Mobile Group or Lebara are mass-market enough to be an option. Sky Mobile seems logical on many fronts, although it would be a significant strategic move for the mothership. A left-field option could be one of the bigger B2B resellers, such as Daisy Group?? The regulatory strategy of creating a fourth operator as a remedy is a questionable one for me. The strategy has seen mixed results in the past across deals in the EU. Time will tell, but I suggest that different terms will be needed from the CMA to make the strategy more effective this time. Regardless, Vodafone and Three are making strong cases. Even after brushing away the inevitable negotiation bluster, their numbers indicate they are both struggling to achieve the required scale to compete long-term as standalone businesses. The MVNO model remains a crucial tool for regulators to promote market competition, and it continues to be a critical part of the telecommunications market ecosystem. The UK operator, Virgin Media O2 just announced a new partnership with Accenture to ramp up its private 5G offerings. This move underscores a growing theme we've been discussing – the fierce competition among UK mobile networks to capture the SME market. The growth of the integrators as primary points of development for companies cannot be underestimated. Connectivity is always important but the process of developing the wider transformations required need different skills and resources 🔘 The Accenture Angle: It's about more than just connectivity. There’s a new campaign we’ve been working on called #MakeItMemorable. It’s targeted at our customers to help them focus on all the ways 5G can drive fan engagement over this summer’s major sporting and music events. It’s pioneering for us because of our use of AI to generate the imagery. We would never have had the resources to produce this level of imagery first-hand so it’s about being creative not only with artwork but also with budget. And what’s more it’s really distinctive messaging and creative, we wanted to stand out from ‘the sea of sameness’ that you might associate with B2B. So it’s a real first for us and a good example of what I'm calling ‘executing with excellence.’ The focus of the campaign is to really zoom in on why 5G connectivity is so important to keeping consumers happy and make sure they don't churn elsewhere: how it can provide so many innovative and interactive, game-changing user-experiences for fans, whether they’re at the stadium or following along at home. We wanted to inspire mobile operators and the end consumer and get them excited about 5G across this summer’s live events. I’m excited for you all to see this campaign come to life, as it launches today across a whopping 71 countries across Europe and Latin America, from France and Sweden to Mexico and Brazil . I am proud of this endeavour not just because of the creative idea and delivery, but also because it shines a light on the importance of teamwork. There's been a lot of publications about the #3G switch off, and this one I found pretty interesting. Vodafone, who completed their 3G switch off in February this year highlight that data transmission over #5G uses 7% less energy than that of 3G. This allows the network to connect more devices (and people), with faster speeds, a more reliable service and using far less energy to do so. EE have also completed their 3G switch off, with VMO2 to follow and eventually 3UK who do not have a 2G network (which the MNO's are presently retaining for some voice and other services). #MobileNews #MobileNetworks #UKtelecoms https://lnkd.in/dcCYXeJi
