When choosing a platform, look for one that allows you to upload your own data. Most online libraries like Set Scouter or Wrapal will help you find new locations but won't let you manage your own database. You don't need to have same time mentorship. I receive advice and mentorship from a number of people asynchronously. We share texts and voice notes on our platform of choice (WhatsApp or Signal mainly). And the messages go back and forth, sometimes with minutes between them. Sometimes with hours or days. They're still all very helpful and help me think through things.

The best advice I get from a plethora of people. People who have the experience to mentor well, are often very busy. Most likely your time will not align super well with any one mentor. You will have to be mindful of that and not get frustrated. If people absolutely never make time for you, maybe they're not the right mentor for you. You can always part ways with someone if it's not a fit, for whatever reason. And you never know who might make a good mentor. Always worth simply sending someone who is a little ahead of you in a similar journey, a quick message saying "hey - how did you do this?" Many people are happy to give their $.02

You never know who will be able to help with a certain problem. I keep ALL my advisors, mentors, and even friends updated on how I'm doing and what I need help with, so that if people have that expertise, they can speak up. I do this through monthly email updates. It's a great practice to get into from day 1 of the business. And then it thoroughly impresses investors when you get to that stage too. Within the email itself, I put a quick reminder of who I am (these people receive a lot of emails), and right below that, my asks!

A great mentor has humility. They know they don't have all the answers and know that what they're sharing is just one opinion. The best mentors I've ever had told me not to follow their advice word for word, but to consider it and only follow it if it made sense for me. The worst have told me that they're right and I am wrong and should do everything they say... At the end of the day you are the expert on your business and any good mentor will know that.
