I was pleased today to read the excellent post of Daniela Rizzi who highlighted the "historic milestone" of #NatureRestorationLaw (#https://lnkd.in/eu88kYfm) for Europe, a legislation that heralds "a new era where nature and economy thrive hand in hand." In the context of the EU-funded GoNaturePositive! project, of which Impact Board I have the privilege to be a member, I adhere to Daniela's point that work on a #naturepositiveeconomy is not just a protective measure but actually a necessary collective endeavor for a healthier planet and a brighter future. It reminds me what Robert Kennedy was saying in his speech at Cape Town, South Africa, in 1966: "Each time a man stands up for an ideal, or acts to improve the lot of others, or strikes out against injustice, he sends forth a tiny ripple of hope, and crossing each other from a million different centers of energy and daring those ripples build a current which can sweep down the mightiest walls of oppression and resistance." Here, it's all about redefining the contract between Nature/Environment/Biodiversity, Human Beings, Living Organisms, and even #IoT enabled Objects. The message is the same: We are all in this together. It is time that humans realize that since humanity exists (homo sapiens 160,000-195,000 years ago), and perhaps more specifically since the first organized societies emerged (in Turkey 9,000 years ago with Çatal Hüyük, in Mesopotamia 5,000 years ago with cities like Eridu, Uruk, Ur or Babylon), climate conditions have been well fit for us and more or less stable. Today's global climate - a bit more than 1C hotter on average than it was in the period before the Industrial Revolution - is exceptional. This is over. As the global temperature today is 1.5C hotter than preindustrial times, we are getting back to the Pleistocene geological era (which included the mammoths). If nothing is done to rapidly curb CO2 emissions and other greenhouse gases, the figure will reach +3C by the end of this century, i.e. during the Miocene (from 23 to 5 million years ago). Previously, temperature changes were due to natural forces (e.g., volcanic activity, proximity of the sun), but now the responsibility lies in humans and the amount of carbon being released in the atmosphere. And what is more worrying is the speed of change. We need to act in an emergency if we want to have a future for humanity! This is why the EU Nature Restoration Law is a good news. And this is why we must all follow and support the work carried out in the GoNaturePositive! project. In The Twenty-Fifth Hour, C. Virgil Gheorghiu got his character Traian say: "The Twenty-Fifth Hour, the hour when mankind is beyond salvation - when it is too late for the coming of the Messiah. It is not the last hour; it is one hour past the last hour. It is Western Civilization at this very moment. It is now." Let's make that his prediction will have been wrong.
