  • The Gendered Impact of the Pandemic Pamphlet: Rebuilding The World for Women

A data-backed policy pamphlet I commissioned and edited investigating the disproportionate impact of the pandemic on women and ethnic minorities, from economic effects to rising domestic abuse, and how to mitigate it in a post-pandemic world. I recruited and worked with a team of 7 writers as well as a range of political leaders and activists on this, from chairing an event with Gill Furniss MP, (Shadow Minister for Women and Equalities), Baroness Verma, (Chair of UN Women’s National Committee and Ministerial Champion for Tackling Violence Against Women and Girls), Frances Scott, (founder of 50:50 Parliament).

We recently had our Parliamentary launch, attended by press, members from Ditchley Foundation, Policy Network, women's charities' representatives and of course many of our own members.

  • The Shadow Pandemic

    iGlobal News

After being selected to be one of two UK delegates to the British South Asian Youth Summit, hosted by Virendra Sharma MP and Baroness Verma, I wrote an article based on the event series I attended alongside delegates from 9 other countries. It looks at media complicity and misrepresentation when characterising perpetrators, repudiating victim blaming narratives and sets out policy recommendations following the LIVES acronym to help women affected financially, mentally and legally.

    Extract:

We know all too well the disease that has brought the world to a shocked standstill. But what we don’t see is the one that already exists, one that this pandemic is in fact already exacerbating. Not a zoonotic disease, accidentally sprung from natural evolution. But a disease written into the genetic signature of our society itself. A disease etched into the heart of our genomic architecture as a collective whole. A disease so insidious and so powerful that in 6,000 years of civilisation, we still have not managed to expunge it.

    Fabian Society

As Co-Editor for a pamphlet focusing on environmental policy ahead of COP26, I edited 5 contributors' papers to prepare for publication, and also wrote my own contribution under the title Climate Accountability, looking at greenwashing, media characterisation of climate change and ecological cascade effects. We verbally presented our findings and policy recommendations at Labour Conference to Kerry McCarthy MP and Matthew Pennycook MP.

  • Article: The Pandemic Impact Gap

    Policy Network

After chairing an event with Gill Furniss MP, Minister for Women and Equalities, I wrote an article based on the discussion which looked at how the pandemic was exacerbating preexisting gender inequalities such as the gender pay gap, and how governments were exploiting the crisis to excuse cutting funding to vital women’s services. This also provided an exposition of the feminicidal violence crisis happening across the globe and what governments were doing to mitigate the rising cases of…
