🚨 UK textile reuse and recycling sector faces crisis point.  WRAP’s latest release of reports paint a concerning picture for the UK’s textile reuse and recycling sector, building on recent warnings coming out of the sector: 🧺 UK citizens are throwing away 49% of all used textiles in the bin - that’s around 35 items per person per year on average.  ♻️ Meanwhile, fast fashion is devaluing textile donations, putting financial strain on the reuse and recycling sector.  WRAP is urgently calling on brands, retailers, investors and governments to come forward and support the sector through grants, investment and legislation. SBTi DEBATE HAS MAJOR IMPLICATIONS FOR SUPPLIERS Should fashion brands be allowed to use carbon offsets to mitigate supply chain emissions? Or are absolute reductions the only way forward? This issue has blown up in recent weeks after the Science Based Targets initiative appeared to suggest it would allow carbon offsets. It has since updated is stance but with brands unable to get control of CO2 emissions, it will not go away. What do new ESPR rules mean for fashion? Is fashion ready for the EU’s ban on destroying unsold goods? DEBBIE SHAKESPEARE looks at the ramifications of the wide-reaching EU regulations: Textiles have become the first sector regulated under the Eco-design for Sustainable Products Regulation (ESPR) and will soon be among the first to have mandatory Digital Product Passports (DPPs). The ESPR entered into force on July 18, 20 days after being added to the EU Official Journal. This marks a 24-month timeline for strategic planning across the supply chain. What is the ESPR? The EU's ESPR, set to apply to all textile products by 2038, aims to transform product design, production, and disposal to reduce environmental impact and achieve net zero by 2050. The Digital Product Passport will provide sustainability information via digital data carriers. The regulation also includes a ban on the destruction of unsold textile goods and annual reporting. The requirements for all product groups will be published in the next stage, with penalties for non-compliance. Small and micro companies will be exempt, while medium-sized companies will benefit from a six-year exemption. Destruction of unsold goods: Retailers need to track obsolete unsold inventory, which can be overstocks, obsolete products, or damaged or recalled items. This is due to a mismatch between demand and production, often caused by inaccurate forecasting or market dynamics. Digital identification solutions and platforms like Avery Dennison's atma.io connected product cloud can help identify improvement opportunities and prevent overproduction and destruction of unsold textile goods. Tighter inventory management : Fashion retailers should improve inventory management and demand forecasting by collaborating with suppliers and investing in advanced technology. This will enable real-time production scaling, eliminating waste and impacting Scope 3 inventory. Implementing product data platforms, forecasting software, RFID tracking, and AI can reduce overproduction. Product lifecycle management: Based on this, circular economy practices like large-scale take-back programs and resale channels will play an essential role in inventory reduction as well as driving down carbon emissions. Sustainable production programs should set medium- and long-term goals for brands in collaboration with suppliers to design more sustainable processes, introduce traceability systems across the value chain as well using digital twin technology (engineering) activities or DPP technologies effectively towards this end.
