ZHA to build the Alisher Navoi International Scientific Research Centre. The Alisher Navoi International Scientific Research Centre in New Tashkent, Uzbekistan will incorporate the Navoi State Museum of Literature, auditorium, research centre, and residential school for 200 students specialising in Uzbek language, literature and the Shashmaqom music traditions. Named after Alisher Navoi, the 15th Century poet, author, linguist and stateman whose works had a profound influence in the cultural heritage of Uzbekistan, the centre’s arched facades and interiors will be crafted from bricks produced in Tashkent’s local kilns, echoing the curvilinear geometries of Uzbekistan’s acclaimed traditional architecture. Courtyards, another Uzbek vernacular tradition, are incorporated within to new centre to provide natural light and ventilation while creating a variety of outdoor gathering spaces and areas for private contemplation. Situated in Tashkent’s Mediterranean-like climate with the continental influence of its Central Asian location, the centre’s design is defined by passive architectural principles. Informed by the wind towers of traditional Central Asian and Middle Eastern architecture that maintain cooler interior temperatures, the geometries and composition of the centre’s supporting arches have been designed as hollow structures with openings that capture the wind and channel cooling ventilation into the building. In the hottest months, this system will be supported by fans and misting to cool the air before it circulates within the structure. In weather conditions without wind, these hollow arched structures create a pressure gradient which extracts hot air upwards, producing a thermal chimney allowing warmer air to escape through the openings at the top of each arch. Coupled with the high thermal mass of the centre’s structure, optimum conditions of comfort can be maintained with minimal energy consumption. Courtyards and skylights bring natural light into the heart of the centre while deep roof overhangs provide its façades with effective solar shading in summer yet permit winter sun into the building to warm the interiors. https://lnkd.in/eSXBCz7r

ON SITE: Construction of the new Taikang Financial Centre in Wuhan is approaching full height Informed by Wuhan’s position as a central hub of China’s transport networks, the design is a circular composition of three interconnected towers within the Hankou Riverside Business District integrating the Yangtze River park and wetlands to the east as well as the city’s new Central Park to the south. With an adjacent station on Line 1 of the city’s metro network, the centre’s garden courtyard extends vertically as an urban canyon between the three towers. Further public spaces and amenities are located on skybridges connecting the towers at higher floors that includes the rooftop garden terrace providing panoramic views across the city and Yangtze River valley. Targeting LEED Gold certification, the circular composition of three interconnected towers provides effective self-shading while external fins with tapered profiles extend from each glazing mullion for additional facade shading whilst maintaining unobstructed views of the city. Founded in 1996, Wuhan’s Taikang Insurance Group has grown to become one of the largest providers of insurance, health and elderly care in China. The new Taikang Financial Centre will be a centre of excellence, developing effective systems and networks that will provide a new ecosystem of support for people of all ages across China. https://lnkd.in/e88z-YfY Photograph by Xue Liang

ZHA’s Erosion Collection nominated as finalist in SBID International Design Awards One of two ZHA designs selected as finalists in this year’s SBID awards, the new Erosion Collection by Zaha Hadid Architects for Neutra explores the dynamic interplay between materiality, time and form. Carved from the finest Carrara marble, the fluid forms and sinuous lines of the collection blur the boundary between furniture and sculpture. The Minera Table emerges as a singular composition defined by its materiality and precision craftsmanship. Expressing the erosion evident in the natural world, the table’s fluid forms have been expertly carved by Neutra from a single block of marble. Accommodating up to eight people, the Minera Table measures 320 x 160 x 72 cm and is an exclusive limited edition of eight pieces. Finely balanced between lightness and solidity, the Branch Console appears simultaneously suspended in space yet firmly grounded by the natural forces acting upon it. Crafted from one piece of marble, two symmetrical branches rise seamlessly from the base to support the 290 x 68 cm surface of the console, defining a central void which enhances the ethereal qualities of the design. Three ZHA projects shortlisted for The Plan Awards 2024 Three projects by Zaha Hadid Architects are shortlisted for The Plan Awards 2024; Zhuhai Jinwan Civic Arts Centre in the ‘Culture’ category, Jiangxi River Bridge in the ‘Transport’ category and Masarycka in the ‘Office & Business’ category. The Plan Awards were established to promote discourse and debate on global design and planning themes. The centre at the heart of Zhuhai’s Jinwan district integrates a Performing Arts Centre, Science Centre and Art Museum; sheltered by latticed steel canopies configured through repetition, symmetry and scale variation. This repetition optimised pre-fabrication, pre-assembly and modular construction. The centre’s landscaping and lake are integral elements of Zhuhai’s ‘sponge city’ initiative that targets the natural permeation, storage and re-use of 70% of the city’s rainwater. The double-insulated glazing of the building’s envelope is optimized for thermal performance. With its 185-metre central span and 55-metre secondary spans reaching to the riverbanks, the Chengdu West First Bridge is a road, cycle and pedestrian bridge over the meandering Jiangxi River; enabling the West Line Road to become the western section of the Airport New Town ring-road and cycle route. As arches provide the most efficient bridge structure for spans between 120-250 meters, the bridge’s steel arches lean together touching at their crown, stabilising the structure while its supporting piers taper into its arches and road deck. Integrating Czech Railways’ modernisation and historic railway station, Masaryčka’s design defines the gateway to the city’s new public plazas and terraces establishing a dialogue with the urbanism of Prague’s Old Town, known as ‘the city of 100 spires’. Achieving LEED Platinum certification and meeting RIBA 2025 targets for embodied & operational carbon, its design incorporates roof gardens, a triple-insulated façade for optimal natural light, photovoltaics harvesting renewable energy and natural ventilation supported by smart management systems to reduce energy consumption.
