About us

Wyedean is a family-owned business, originally established in 1964 as a manufacturer of braid and uniform accoutrement. Based in Bridgehouse Mill in the historic town of Haworth, West Yorkshire, today we have 60 years of experience specialising in the manufacture of military uniforms and ceremonial accoutrements from fabrics for medals to military badges and medals. Our customers include the British Ministry of Defence, the Armed Forces, the Metropolitan Police, the Royal Canadian Mounted Police and the Australian, New Zealand and Canadian Armed Forces to name a few. At Wyedean, we care deeply about sustainability, and in 2023 we improved our mill with the installation of rooftop solar panels to help us in our efforts to being a more sustainable business. We also work with local schools to donate offcuts and waste textile materials for arts and crafts purposes.

M E E T - T H E - T E A M 👋 J E A N I E Introducing Jeanie, our skilled production technician whose work life revolves around the loom. She has been with us at Wyedean Weaving since June 4th, 2018, and her deep-rooted passion for textiles is truly inspiring. 🧵 From a young age, Jeanie has been immersed in weaving thanks to her parents. As she puts it: “Both my parents were in textiles, so right from being a youngster, that’s all I’ve known. I’ve been around looms nearly all my life. It’s part of my DNA.” Fluent in the unique language of the looms, Jeanie spots even the tiniest imperfections with ease. “We may simply pass by a warp and immediately notice an out-of-place end. It's a terminology that represents our entire way of life,” she explains. Jeanie's work includes making Fleur De Lis Lace for Infantry Officer Drummers jackets as well as white cotton leading ropes for the King’s horses. Fun fact: she can walk down a room eighteen times to achieve different lengths of ropes, helping her hit her daily step goal! 🚶♀️ In her past, Jeanie was known for making tailored gamekeeping jackets for Harrods, showcasing her keen eye for quality and detail. Her exceptional skills have earned her international acclaim, including the renowned yellow stripe on the Canadian Mounted Police trousers. Thousands of meters of her work are produced annually, showcasing her dedication. 🌍👏 Join us in celebrating Jeanie’s remarkable contribution to the world of weaving! 💛 #MasterWeaver #TextileArt #WyedeanWeaving #ArtisanSpotlight #WeavingTradition

Last week, I was lucky to be able to get a few shots behind the scenes at Wyedean to see how the weaving industry is still alive and thriving in Haworth for a project I'm working on. The company was founded 60 years ago and supplies all kinds of uniforms, insignia and regalia (and a lot more besides) to the Ministry of Defence and the United Nations, as well as film and TV companies. Many of their products were on show at Trooping the Colour in June, including the magnificent Irish Guards’ Colours, the centrepiece of the whole ceremony. I could have happily watched the machines in the mill working all day. They are completely mesmerising and that distinctive clattering sound is a real window onto the history of the village, as was watching Robert’s skill in warping the threads in preparation for weaving medal ribbons. The imposing character on sentry duty outside the mill is known as “Private Parts”, for obvious reasons although, judging from his insignia, he appears to have been promoted. I have to say a huge thank you to MD Robin Wright and Claire Gibson for a fascinating tour and to all the staff for being so welcoming and helpful. #madeinyorkshire

R O L L - O F - H O N O U R - W A L L - M E M O R I A L Did you know Wyedean made a promise to protect a war memorial that was almost lost forever? Wartime researchers struggled to find it a new home. In October 2018, Wyedean Weaving Co. Ltd. proudly welcomed the historic Roll of Honour from Woodlands Lodge, Haworth, into our care. This solemn memorial, originally dedicated to the fallen and served members of the Great War, faced an uncertain fate until The Men of Worth Project C.I.C. and the War Memorials Trust intervened. Facing logistical challenges due to its size and delicate condition, the Roll of Honour was carefully relocated down Haworth’s main street, symbolising a community's determination to safeguard its heritage. With the support and diligence of Men of Worth's outreach efforts, this piece of history found a new sanctuary. As suppliers of ceremonial parade wear to the UK Ministry of Defence, we understand the significance of preserving our past. Through joint funding, we restored the memorial, ensuring it stands as a lasting tribute to those who made the ultimate sacrifice. Today, just a few hundred yards from its original location, the Roll of Honour continues to inspire and educate, reminding us of the bravery and service of our predecessors. We're grateful to have played a part in its preservation and pledge to uphold its legacy for generations to come. We are looking into offering private viewings very soon. Stay tuned for updates and join us in honouring our history. #RollOfHonour #WarMemorial #HeritagePreservation #CommunitySpirit

R E V O L U T I O N I S I N G - T R A D I T I O N Did you know that Wyedean has a legacy of innovation that dates back decades? In the 1990s, we revolutionised the way full dress waist sashes for The Royal Household Regiments were made. These sashes, once hand crafted from pure silk and gold thread, were incredibly beautiful but cost many thousands of pounds. To maintain excellence while reducing costs, we developed a high-quality synthetic version almost identical in appearance that was approved and embraced by our customers. This innovation not only preserved the majestic look of these ceremonial items but also saved the taxpayer a great deal of money. Today, our waist sashes made from machine woven ribbons continue to be a symbol of tradition, innovation, and quality regularly in wear on State occasions. Here you can see the transformation of royal regalia! 📸 [Photos show Guards in full dress wearing their sashes, and King Charles III wearing a General Officers Waist Sash] Our commitment to quality and cost-efficiency continues to shine through every thread we weave. #TextileInnovation #TraditionMeetsInnovation #RoyalRegalia #RegimentalSashes

C E L E B R A T I O N S - F O R - F O U N D E R S - D A Y We had an amazing time celebrating Founders Day yesterday. Although it was the day after the official date, it was the day we were all together at work. This tradition honours the birthday of our incredible founder, David Wright, which falls on July 14th.🥳 In true David style, we brought back a cherished tradition. Every year, David would treat us all to an ice cream van visit at the mill. Thanks to Susannah’s efforts, we managed to secure a van this year with the fantastic Soft Joes Ice Cream and it was a sweet success! 🚚💨 At 10am, the ice cream van arrived, and we all enjoyed some delicious ice cream together! 🍦❤️ Check out these fantastic moments captured from yesterday's celebration. Let’s keep David’s legacy alive by continuing to create wonderful memories together! 📸 💬For staff past and present share your favourite memory in the comments below! 😋🍨 #FoundersDay #WyedeanTraditions #IceCreamsAllRound #DavidWright #FoundersDayTraditions
