My experience with the WPHN Congress 2024 has been incredibly enriching and transformative. During my MSc at the University of Westminster, I recall Regina Keith informing us about hosting the Congress, emphasizing our role as GPHN students. I fondly remember meeting with Margaret Miller World Public Health Nutrition Association team last year and applying for the Student Co-Creator (SCC) fund, which allowed us to engage in pre-congress activities. Then QUINTIN HOGG TRUST fund enabled us for community conversation tour, where we gathered voices from people experiencing food and nutrition insecurities. Witnessing the impact of food banks and the right-to-food movement on children's access to nutritious meals was eye-opening. I'll never forget a headteacher from Liverpool saying, "You can't be functional if you don't eat!" These interactions were thought-provoking and profoundly impactful. Supporting the Congress from day one provided numerous learning opportunities, connecting me with like-minded individuals. It also meant balancing our time between sessions I wanted to attend and those I needed to help. Nevertheless, witnessing the seamless organization and constant updates through our Excel sheets was incredible! It also allowed me to share my posters, abstracts, and experiences as a speaker. I had the opportunity to present my research findings and sharing my dissertation experience, mainly using the PLRA tool. Also, engaging with global social protection experts in a session provided invaluable insights, while presenting my findings on the benefits of social protection fostered engaging discussions and constructive feedback. These will be invaluable for refining my research papers. Our GPHN community truly shone, and I am proud and blessed to be guided by Dr. Regina Murphy Keith, Sharon Noonan-Gunning, PhD, RD. Xanthi Maragkoudaki, MSc, PhD, Dr Ihab Tewfik Raysa El Zein Malika Al Kattan. The days were hectic but immensely rewarding. This Congress exemplifies our commitment to "From the people to the people," and we will continue to uphold this mission. Thank you, Peter Bonfield School of Life Sciences at the University of Westminster Royal Society of Medicine for empowering our GPHN community and allowing me to participate in the fantastic WPHN Congress 2024. Special thanks to Dr. Regina for her continuous inspiration and motivation. Kudos to you and our marvellous team! “I am presently participating in the World Public Health Nutrition Congress, June 10-13, 2023, London The main theme of congress is “Questioning the Solutions: has the Decade of Nutrition delivered?” The pre-event was a film festival with topics on “Right to Food” and “Hunger is a Political Choice.” The congress launched with various related workshops. On the second day, I had an incredible opportunity to present some findings of our elderly nutrition project, including “Socio-economic Determinants of Frailty” and the “Effect of Dietary Adequacy Change on Anthropometric Indices Over Time.” I also spoke about “Reflections on Addressing Anaemia: A Decade’s Progress in Iran Based on Achievement of Global Nutrition Target 2” in the “Health System Delivering Optimum Nutrition” symposium. And it is ongoing… Please join me for my presentation today on “Cost-Affordability of a Sustainable Food Basket in Comparison with Iranians’ Current Food Basket” and our community conversation group entitled “Lived Experience from Food Insecure University Students.”

Studying Global Public Health Nutrition MSc at Westminster University

Community Voices Take Centre Stage at the opening of the World Public Health Nutrition Congress in the University of Westminster, Marylebone. A short post to share the impact of my role at the World Public Health Nutrition Congress, where I served as Director of Communications. A Platform for Voices - Inspired by the World Public Health Nutrition Congress theme, 'Questioning the Solutions: Has the Decade of Nutrition Delivered?' we sought to amplify the voices of those experiencing food insecurity. Through a "Community Conversations" tour across four UK cities, we engaged with policymakers, food banks, and organizations tirelessly advocating for the right to food. Throughout the tour, I interviewed individuals about their lived experiences of food insecurity, as well as the incredible work of organisations advocating for change. Alongside this, a global call for voices on our congress website invited video submissions on experiences with feeding families and communities. Videos poured in from all corners of the world. Film Premiere Ignites Dialogue - On June 9th, the culmination of these efforts arrived with the community conversations film premiere. I had the honour of producing two films that provided a powerful platform for those struggling to feed themselves, their families, and their communities. The premiere wasn't just a screening – it was a catalyst for conversation. Following an opening panel where I outlined the rationale behind the film's creation – to provide a platform for the voices of those facing food insecurity – the audience connected with the raw vulnerability of the filmed experiences. The raw emotion resonated deeply, prompting thoughtful reflection. The film served as a springboard for our own "community conversations" following the film, where a microphone was passed around the theatre. These films aren't mine – they belong to the individuals whose voices they carry. Their stories serve as a stark reminder of the work that remains in ensuring everyone has the right to nutritious food. I'm grateful to Congress Convenor Regina Keith, my colleagues, and everyone who participated in the Community Conversations tour and video submissions. Your voices are vital in shaping the future of food security. #wphncongress2024 #RightToFood #CommunityConversations
