Good to be in Parliament today to back the sport and leisure sector's calls to the new Government and to hear Kim Leadbeater MP (speaking below) and Steph Peacock MP commit to the value of sport. Here are the National Sector Partner Group asks, slightly re-expressed and augmented with a gendered lens which matters at every level: 1. Ensure access to high quality natural green space, clean rivers and seas (girls and women are currently the least active and safe in parks and are particularly affected by polluted waters given wild swimming is so popular with women). 2. Use sport to power a prevention-first NHS and public health system (gendered health inequalities can be mitigated by activity - we face appalling rates of female teenage anxiety and osteoporosis to name just two). 3. Continue to invest National Lottery and Exchequer funding in participation & community sport, reduce burdens on leisure providers and reassure disabled people that regular activity will not affect their benefits (and correct the imbalance in provision for girls and women including through female-only opportunities) 4. Transform school life to prioritise learning outdoors, time in nature and 60 minutes a day of PE, sport and play. (rectifying negative early years stereotyping by building girls' sports skills and ensuring single sex provision at times) 5. Boost productivity by keeping people well whether through exercise referral schemes or Cycle to Work initiatives (provide dedicated support for the female workforce given the unique barriers they face whether pregnancy and menopause, or unfair pressure at home to do housework or unpaid care for children and the elderly) #Takethelead Women in Sport

How much do you know about this iconic race? The 100m wheelchair sprint has been a highlight of the Paralympic Games since 1968. But for women competing that year, they had to settle for a 60m alternative. It wasn’t until 1976, 8 years after the men’s event was introduced, that women were allowed to show their skill and speed across the full distance. Good luck to all our phenomenal ParalympicsGB women competing in the 100m races at this year’s Games 🌟 Learn more about some of the female athletes competing for Paralympics GB this summer > https://lnkd.in/eFYXRyTN #Paris2024 #Paralympics #ParalympicsGB #Paralympics2024

Women are leading the way 🤩 During the Paralympics, we're keeping track of the medal tables by splitting results into medals won by women and men. Let's take a look at the medal standings as of yesterday, Day 4, at the 2024 Paralympic Games 👉 👏 GB women have won 10 more medals than GB men ♎ The USA's current medal standings almost shows complete parity between men's and women's medals 🥉 If Chinese women were their own nation, they would still be third on the overall leader board Explore the full medal table: https://ow.ly/jGA350Tcg5m

While Paris 2024 has been lauded as the first-ever ‘gender-equal’ Games, it’s important we recognise how far we still have to go. When we look at coaching, both in the Paralympics and Olympics, women are still underrepresented across the field. Not only can female coaches provide invaluable insight into their sport, but they also send an important message to girls – and boys – that women belong in sport. This is why we must change the state of play for women in coaching to make it more accessible and attractive – watch this space 👀 Find out more about the history of women at the Paralympics here: https://lnkd.in/eWGZrsf6 #Paralympics #ParalympicGames #Paris2024 #ParalympicsGB

On 18th September 1960, wheelchair athletes and injured servicemen and women gathered in Rome to take part in the 9th Stoke Mandeville Games. These Games gradually morphed into what we now know to be the Paralympic Games, and unlike the Olympics, these competitions have always allowed women to enter. Things to know about this year’s Paralympic Games... ♿ 4,400 para-athletes will compete 🥇 There are a record 235 medal events for women 🏹 22 sports on offer Find out more about the history of women at the Paralympics here: https://lnkd.in/eWGZrsf6 #Paralympics #ParalympicGames #Paris2024 #ParalympicsGB

"I still don't think they recognised my achievements." Meet Monica Vaughan, ten-time Paralympic medallist in swimming and Britain's most successful Paralympian at the 1976 Games in Toronto. Monica was absolutely unbeatable at her first Games, yet she still didn't get the true sporting recognition she deserved. In our latest episode of the Women in Sport podcast, we chat to Monica about her early years, the Paralympics and what it means to be a disabled woman in sport. Monica also played an important part of the history of Women in Sport, having chaired the organisation from 1990 to 1993, so we are honoured to be catching up with her in our 40th anniversary year.
