Earth is rapidly slipping towards a 6th Mass Extinction Event. The best time to act was 50 years ago, but the 2nd best time is now. Transform 2024 into the year where your company tangibly recovers the local environment. Natural recovery that your team can see with their own eyes... without leaving the city! Check out the video to see our new partner rewilding site in Kingston, run by Citizen Zoo. Big thanks to Sensat for providing their incredible platform to track natural recovery over time. - Wilderkind Pivot - We've been quiet on this platform for a few months as we've gone through a period of reflection and change. After 1.5 years of running Wilderkind and working with 14 pioneering businesses to fund rewilding sites in Somerset and London, I've decided to pivot Wilderkind to a free educational hub. This hub will focus on the biodiversity market and celebrate businesses funding nature recovery, which I'll manage in my spare time while working at another leading climate impact platform. Several factors led to this decision, but ultimately, Wilderkind wasn't generating enough demand to sustain the business. The biodiversity market is still emerging, and despite progress, the demand side hasn't grown enough to support services like Wilderkind’s. Nature urgently needs business funding, and while I believe the market will mature, we lack the resources to bridge the gap until it does. This is why we are pivoting to a free educational hub to raise awareness about the biodiversity crisis and how businesses can get involved. More details will follow, but for now, I want to thank everyone who has supported our journey so far—our clients who took a risk on a startup in a new space, our incredible rewilding partners, and our wonderful advisory board. I’m deeply grateful for your support. Citizen Zoo & Somerset Wildlands Charlie Forshaw, Natalie Fée, Wojciech Bendorf-Bundorf, James Lyon, Chris D'Agorne

Happy #WorldRewildingDay from Wilderkind! Today, we celebrate the incredible power of nature to heal itself. Here at Wilderkind, we've spent the past year laying the foundations necessary to accelerate nature recovery in Britain. We're thrilled with the progress made at our flagship partner sites: Athelney, led by Somerset Wildlands, and Wild Tolworth & Paradise Fields, spearheaded by Citizen Zoo. Thanks to our clients' support, we've achieved some great milestones: - Mapping recovery: We partnered with Sensat to create a full digital 3D map of both sites. This vital tool will guide future rewilding efforts. - Unveiling hidden residents: We conducted a comprehensive water vole survey in Athelney, ensuring that we're able to begin interventions to improve the habitat. - Listening to the land: We funded a bio-acoustics survey at Athelney, gaining valuable insights into the existing soundscape and how it changes with rewilding. These are just the first steps! This year, we're excited to announce plans for: - Building a network of scrapes in Athelney: These shallow depressions will provide vital breeding grounds for amphibians and invertebrates, boosting biodiversity & holding water on the site for longer. - Bringing back the beaver: We're exploring the possibility of introducing beavers to specific urban centres, following careful study and community engagement. - Introducing White Storks back to London!: We're looking for funding to launch a white stork program, bringing these marvellous birds back to our skies. We're incredibly grateful for your support in making Wilderkind a reality. Together, we're rewilding landscapes and rekindling our connection with the natural world. Let's keep the momentum going! #WorldRewildingDay #Wilderkind #rewilding #conservation #naturebasedsolutions #beavers

A huge thank you to our amazing Wilderkind clients who funded a water vole survey at our partner rewilding site in the Levels, owned & managed by Somerset Wildlands! 🌿 The survey involved two dedicated ecologists spending several hours meticulously combing the fields, searching for signs of water vole activity, from fresh droppings to burrows and distinctive piles of half-eaten vegetation with a characteristic 45-degree angle chew mark. 🕵️♂️🍃 This crucial work was commissioned in preparation for the upcoming creation of a network of scrapes. Since the scrape creation process requires heavy machinery, it was essential to ensure that no water voles had already established their homes on the site. As anticipated, no tell-tale signs were found, giving us the green light to proceed with the scrapes. ✅ These scrapes, or shallow pools, will help retain water on the site for longer periods, creating an ideal habitat for a diverse array of life, including amphibians, birds, and potentially even water voles! 🐸🐦. Once the floodwaters recede, we'll be rolling up our sleeves and diving into the scrape creation process – stay tuned for updates! 🌊👷♂️ Huge shout out to the growing Wilderkind client community for their support! SLX, Sensat, Wylder Naturals, the alive life, The Culture Chain, Believe Digital, Terraway, Green Circle Solutions, Alex Price, The Dog Nutritionist, About You Stationary, Tiene Devos Elle Adams, thanks for doing the work!

So I finally let people into my 💚 after 6 months of secrecy. A private passion project which was only ever seen by my family, until 5.11PM last night... Rob Wreglesworth is the first official user of Life to Land! He's the first of 4 people in a closed alpha test of this new portal for landowners. These testers will help me identify and squash any bugs before 'real' users start coming in. Then, there's a long list of landowners on the waiting list who I'll email with the news that the beta version Life to Land is ready for use. That's certainly going to be a nervewracking moment! I've put together a press release in advance of the beta release here: https://lnkd.in/e_k2RDWk I was delighted to read the first comments from Rob after he'd logged in: "It looks so good on first impressions - what an amazing resource." I can't wait to get more people signed up and using this service that I've spent so long working on. The past week has been almost entirely dedicated to bug fixing and proofreading, to make sure that every page on the site is in tip-top shape. In fact, Rob Wreglesworth and I discussed Life to Land on his podcast, which I recorded back in mid December. I had no idea back then, that I was still two months away from the launch, as it has been much more complicated to get this service up and running than anticipated. But you can listen to the podcast we made now, to find out more about my life with bears in Alaska and hear some hot takes on #naturerecovery: Spotify: https://lnkd.in/evwfNrij Apple Podcasts: https://lnkd.in/eykAMBhm Pocketcasts: https://lnkd.in/eZpaWSbm Life to Land is a pioneering portal designed to empower landowners with clear and actionable advice for enhancing #biodiversity and productivity on farms, smallholdings, nature reserves and gardens. Back in November 2023, the government announced plans to create two new National Parks in Britain. Although exciting on the face of it (and perhaps politically well chosen with a flop at COP upcoming), a reality check is in order for expectations on improved ecosystem health and biodiversity. Why? Well our existing National Parks are already facing huge challenges in terms of biodiversity, and our perception of what a healthy British national park looks like is so out of step with reality. Think of one of our National Parks and one conjures visions of stark, bare & weather-beaten landscapes. Beautiful yes, but largely lifeless! This is not the natural order of things, but a result of decades of degradation. Only 6.25% of the SSSIs within our National Parks are in good condition, or in other words, even the small areas within our National Parks that we dedicate to nature are failing. But where is the outrage? Where is the fury? Perhaps we are trapped within the confines of our collective imaginations, unable to envisage what our parks could & should look like and therefore oblivious to the scale of loss. We saw an outpouring of outrage when the Sycamore Gap tree was felled in Northumberland National Park, but few noticed that the real tragedy was not that the tree was felled, but that it was the last tree to be felled. We should mourn the forests that were lost years ago, the species driven out, the saplings that were grazed before they had a chance to mature & the wetlands drained. The wild nature of our parks lost, restrained, confined and destroyed. Only through acceptance of this loss can we move on and create something better. Check out the article in the comments for an explanation of why we're in such a pickle and how we can improve the state of our National Parks. #rewilding #naturebasedsolutions #RewildOurNationalParks 📊 A Few Key Facts: Nature Depletion: Despite 12% of Great Britain's land being within National Parks, the UK ranks among the most nature-depleted countries globally. SSSIs in Poor Condition: Only 6.25% of SSSIs within our National Parks are in "favorable" or "good" ecological condition. Woodland Cover Disparity: National Parks have less woodland cover than urban areas. Currently, just 15% of the land across all English National Parks is woodland. Peatland Damage: 80% of the UK's peatlands are in a damaged state.
