Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) is a growing global health crisis, particularly in low- and middle-income countries. This century has seen greater political interest in AMR and increased efforts to monitor, understand and treat drug-resistant infections. But more needs to be done to turn evidence from research findings into policy and action. Read our explainer to learn more ⤵️ https://lnkd.in/ezqKNaiv

Many people with psychosis hear voices that other people cannot hear. Avatar Therapy lets them digitally recreate the voice they hear and speak back to it. It helps people take power and control within the conversation and reduces the distress they experience when they hear the voice. This research is led by King's College London and supported by us. Understanding exactly how climate change impacts mental health challenges – and finding effective ways to address them – is not an easy task. It requires both climate and mental health experts working together to achieve a shared goal. That’s what Collins Iwuji, faculty member at the Africa Health Research Institute (AHRI) in South Africa, aims to do in his Wellcome-funded research focused on documenting the impacts of extreme weather events on mental health. Find out more about how Collins is facilitating collaboration in our latest ‘Behind the Research’ ⤵️

The study of genomes underpins our understanding of human health and disease. But current data isn’t representative of the global population. For science to benefit everyone, we need greater diversity in genomic research. Our new report sets out how funders can make a difference. Climate change isn’t a future problem – it’s impacting our health today. The 2024 The Lancet Countdown on Health and Climate Change report, supported by Wellcome, reveals alarming trends: 📈 50+ extra days of health-threatening temperatures in 2023 📈 extreme drought impacted nearly half of global land areas 📈 global energy-related carbon dioxide emissions reached an all-time high But there is hope. ♻️ Deaths from fossil fuel air pollution fell by nearly 7% from 2016 to 2021. ♻️ A 10% surge in renewable energy investment in 2023. ♻️ Renewables now power 10.5% of global electricity (as of 2021), creating job growth. The resources to deliver net zero emissions and secure a healthy future are available. It’s time for global leaders to pivot away from fossil fuels and invest in clean renewable energy. It will save millions of lives. Download the report to explore how we can move towards a healthier, equitable future. ⤵️🔗 https://lnkd.in/eRrYNUXC

Using avatars in psychosis therapy can help those who hear voices. Professor Miranda Wolpert at Wellcome Trust says "It is very exciting to see the emergence of a powerful new digital therapy that could be life-changing for people who hear voices". The study builds on more than a decade of pioneering research.

👇 This is AVATAR therapy. New research shows it could be life-changing for people living with psychosis. How does the therapy work? Psychosis is a mental health condition characterised by feeling disconnected from reality. It can include seeing or hearing things that aren’t really there. In Avatar Therapy, people with psychosis work with a therapist to build a digital avatar that looks and sounds like the voice inside their head. Individuals can then speak directly with their avatar, stand up to the negative statements they hear and take control of the conversation. The latest trial of the therapy was led by researchers at King's College London and funded by Wellcome. Today, they published their results confirming its effectiveness. Compared to those who received treatment as usual, participants who received AVATAR therapy saw a significant reduction in the distress caused by the voices they heard, as well as their frequency. So, what’s next for AVATAR therapy? We’re now funding a follow-on study until 2027 that will culturally adapt and test the technology in Ethiopia and India. The therapy has also been recommended for use by the UK’s National Health Service (NHS). Learn more about AVATAR therapy: https://lnkd.in/euEma6tn
