We all have that manager we’ll never forget — for better or worse Our relationship with our manager has a bigger impact on our mental health and wellbeing than that of our therapists, and even as much as our partners But most managers get little or no training. They're accidental bosses promoted based on technical skill rather than their ability to lead people So we hit the streets of London and New York to hear your stories — the good ones, the bad ones, and everything in between

Chief Human Resources Officer at IBM

I am humbled and beyond honored to be named as the 2024 HR Executive of the Year from HR Executive. It’s not often that you join the ranks of such incredibly distinguished CHROs such as Cheryl Johnson (2023), Peter Fasolo, Ph.D. (2022), Kathleen Hogan (2021), Ellyn Shook (2020), David Rodriguez, PhD (2019), and my predecessor Diane Gherson (2018).     When I began my career as an intern at IBM almost 25 years ago, I never thought I would wind up as CHRO. I did not get to this seat alone, and I did not win this award alone – there is an incredible team of hard working, innovative, creative, growth minded IBMers that I am sharing this with, and I’m so proud of them!     At IBM, our purpose is “To be the catalyst that makes the world work better.” I see evidence of this in the work we do for our clients, our business and our communities every day.    Whether we’re transforming our own IBM HR processes with #AI and #hybridcloud, reskilling and upskilling to tackle new job roles, evolving the employee experience, or using #GenAI to create the next digital assistant for IBMers worldwide, there is nothing our IBM HR team can’t do.    So team, I’m dedicating this HR Executive of the Year Award to you . . . thank you for everything you do to make IBM an amazing place to work! #proudIBMer

Parul Kapoor, Chief Talent and Culture Officer, shares her approach to wellbeing at Calix 💡 Parul brings over 20 years of HR experience across global companies. At Calix, a remote-first tech leader, she's focussed on creating a culture where people can thrive. She first experienced Unmind when her husband shared the platform with her, and practising gratitude soon became a nightly ritual for her whole family 💛 Impressed by its accessibility and impact, she brought Unmind to Calix to better support their global team's mental health. Parul loves how Unmind not only supports employees, but enables leaders to better understand their teams’ needs with anonymised, aggregated data 📈 Almost 30% of Calix employees engage with Unmind, but Parul says that measuring the impact of wellbeing tools goes beyond the numbers. “It’s that one employee who was on the edge, needed help and we had the tools that helped bring them back. That’s a huge win.” Thank you Parul and the whole Calix team for your inspiring partnership. Watch this space 🚀

Is it possible to achieve 'work-life balance'? Lindsay Pattison, Chief People Officer at WPP, believes balance is the wrong word. Instead, she focuses on helping people to integrate work with life. "You need to understand what's going on in their life. Not for you to fix everything, but for you to be accommodating." Gary K., HR Director at Teva Pharmaceuticals, opens up about grief, neurodiversity and the power of conversation Personal stories have real power - especially when they come from a leader. When leaders open up, it sets an example and helps make others feel safe to do the same. It’s been great working with the Teva team on their internal campaigns and helping them to create a more open, caring and psychologically safe culture for all. Thank you Gary for your generosity and openness 💛
