NEW RESEARCH📢 Today we're publishing the outputs from our project focusing on the experiences and perspectives of Gypsy, Roma and Traveller communities on the collection and use of ethnicity data in health services. The Gypsy, Roma and Traveller communities are known to face some of the most severe health inequalities in the UK. Although the need to better capture data on these communities is generally beginning to be better recognised, resolving administrative issues does not resolve other reasons for data inaccuracy and incompleteness for these communities, namely social exclusion and barriers in access to health and care services. 📰 The outputs of this research include a desk review that explores the concept of ethnic categorisation and how it applies to Gypsy, Roma and Traveller groups, as well as a full report of the community engagement work we conducted including surveys and focus groups. 👏 Thank you to all of our participants, advisory group members, and to University of Worcester and GATE Herts for partnering with us on this project 🔗Explore the outputs here: https://lnkd.in/e3yxfTda

AI Opportunities Action Plan - what's in it for patient data? Yesterday, the Government published an AI Opportunities Action Plan, which aims to set out plans to ramp up the adoption of artificial intelligence (AI) to boost economic growth and improve lives. Whilst the plan is largely not focused on health, it contains a few points relevant to health data, particularly as it relates to making high-quality data available for AI models. The AI Opportunities Action Plan welcomes the Government's plans for creating a National Data Library and recommends rapidly identifying public data sets to make available for AI researchers and innovators, exploring the use of synthetic data generation techniques for highly sensitive data sets. Alongside making existing datasets available for researchers, the plan recommends the Government play an active role in shaping data collection and the creation of new datasets in strategically significant areas to enhance research in areas like disease recognition and predicting health outcomes. In making datasets available, the plan notes that careful consideration should be given to the valuation of public data given their status as a public asset. In addition to recommendations around making public data available for AI innovators, the plan makes recommendations to increase adoption of AI across the public sector, citing trials in the NHS where AI has been successfully used to assist with administrative tasks and to support diagnosis through technologies to help process medical scans. Science and Technology Secretary Peter Kyle said in a statement that the NHS and goverment would "always be in control of data and how it is used and who has access to it" and sources from the government have said that de-identified NHS data would only be included in the public datasets made available to researchers "once privacy concerns [are] met". AI can be used to drive improvements in health research and care delivery, and the richness of NHS datasets have the opportunity to contribute to the development of novel AI technologies. However, more clarity is needed on how the Government plans to ensure sensitive health data is kept safe and secure, and members of the public need to be consulted to understand their perspectives on the uses of patient data for AI and ensure any access to data has public trust at the heart. UPD is scoping some research and engagement work around patient data and AI in the new year - get in touch if this is something you'd like to discuss with the team! Today the UK Government announced a new AI Opportunities Action Plan. Read the full response from Ada Director, Gaia Marcus FRSA, on our website: "Much of the plan will require careful implementation to succeed. And there will be no bigger roadblock to AI’s transformative potential than a failure in public confidence." https://lnkd.in/edMSPQVB

New year, new health data policy announcements! 📆 Last week, the Government announced plans for a new digital platform to improve sharing of health data between NHS and social care staff, as part of a wider reform package for adult social care in England. The platform aims to reduce the need to repeat information about people's care needs and ensure the information shared between services is up to date to save staff time and improve individual care. The Government aims for all adult social care providers to be fully digitised and for staff to be able to access up-to-date information by the end of this Parliament.
