Last night, Goldsmiths' Company Trade Warden Joanna Hardy and NAJ CEO Ben Massey attended a reception at 10 Downing Street to celebrate the 40th London Fashion Week with Sir Chris Bryant, Minister of State for the Department for Culture Media and Sport (pictured). Attendees received a public address from Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer and Lisa Nandy, Secretary of State for the Department for Culture, Media and Sport. Sir Keir spoke about the importance of the fashion industry, the value of the creative and cultural industries, and the need to embed creativity into the whole education system, championing STEAM and not STEM. It was also welcome to hear Sir Keir talk about the importance of partnerships and that the industry must push his team to make a change, something that the UK Jewellery, Silverware, and Allied Crafts Roundtable group has begun to do. Lisa Nandy spoke about the importance of supporting emerging talent, referencing the British Fashion Council’s NextGen initiative. British Fashion Council Chair David Pemsel and CEO Caroline Rush also spoke, celebrating the contribution London Fashion Week and the Fashion Industry makes to the UK economy and society. Chair, David Pemsel referred to the five key priorities for BFC (copied below), and that they would remain the priorities to partner with the government on and make progress. - Restore the VAT Retail Export Scheme (Also known as “Tax-Free Shopping”) and reform business rates to boost growth in the fashion retail sector - Greater trade and export investment for UK fashion designers - Support our world-leading fashion education sector with a commitment to STEAM, not STEM - Develop a new generation of businesses and skilled workers in the fashion sector - Introduce legislation to activate sustainable business practices to meet decarbonisation and net-zero targets #UKJSAC #Jewellers #CreativeEducation
