International trade is changing, with rising protectionist practices, challenges to the rules-based international system and overcapacity in key sectors that mean domestic industry is struggling to compete fairly. The UK Government will also be launching its industrial and trade strategies in early 2025 to ensure the economic interests of key UK sectors where growth can be accelerated are defended. The TRA wants to hear your views now 🎯 on how it can best respond to these global challenges and ensure the UK’s trade defence measures are fit for the future. We've commissioned independent research agency Savanta to listen to your views and better understand what matters most to UK businesses, stakeholders and those sectors who may suffer injury from unfair international trade. If you work in international trade, manufacturing, or trade policy, we want to hear from you. 📅 Research period: mid-October to mid-November ⏱️ Just 45 minutes of your time 💡 Shape the future of UK trade remedies. The TRA defends UK economic interests against unfair international trade practices.
About us
The UK’s Trade Remedies Authority will investigate whether new trade remedy measures are needed. Like all trade remedies authorities around the world, it will operate under World Trade Organization rules, with the aim of supporting the principles of fair trade. Since the UK left the European Union, the UK’s trade remedies investigations have been carried out by the Trade Remedies Investigations Directorate, part of the Department of International Trade. The passing of the Trade Act, 29 April 2021, formally establishes the Trade Remedies Authority as an independent arm’s length body of the Department for International Trade.

The Trade Remedies Authority was established as a non-department public body of the Department for Business and Trade in 2021 and therefore well-placed to quickly design processes and procedures that were “pandemic proof”. These included the use of remote #verification. As the world reverts to a post-pandemic normal, it is a good time to consider the importance of in-person verification visits. Our latest #blog outlines some of the challenges encountered during the pandemic period and introduces some background about verification, what an in-person verification visit entails, and some comparisons between the features of in-person and #remote visits. https://lnkd.in/eVsbVw_Q

Last month, two of our Analyst Team members, Ilona Serwicka and Neeraja Wankhaday attended the European Trade Study Group’s (ETSG) 2024 conference hosted by Athens University of Economics and Business. International trade is constantly evolving, and it's crucial for us to engage with trade experts, academics, and research institutes to foster evidence and research around trade remedies. Our Head of Evaluation and Research, Ilona Serwicka, presented on evaluating the UK’s trade remedy measures and the methodology involved in such analysis. This conference provided valuable insights into the latest trends in #internationaltrade. #ETSG #traderemedies

Last week our Lead Investigator, James Iddiols, spoke at the Argus Media Biofuels Europe Conference and Exhibition. Jim’s keynote discussed unfair industry practises caused by dumping and subsidies. Currently, the TRA has two live cases concerning biodiesel: 🟢 an anti-dumping investigation into biodiesel from China 🟢 a transition anti-subsidy review into biodiesel from Argentina. You can keep up to date with both cases on our public file: https://lnkd.in/ei_RSYBb. The Government has accepted our recommendation to vary the tariff rate quota on imports of Category 1 steel products. The steel safeguard measure will therefore be varied by duplicating Category 1 to form Categories 1A and 1B. The quota for 1A, accessible by parties looking to import for commercial applications, will be retained at current levels; the quota for 1B, accessible solely for downstream processing, will be set 132% higher. The total Category 1 quota will now be around 3.3 million tonnes per year. These changes, which come into effect from 1 October 2024, follow the reduction in UK domestic production of Category 1 steel. #steel #trade #traderemedies #tariffratequota https://lnkd.in/eCfqj-Ha
