📝New content added on Ideas on Europe by Europe of Knowledge: 'What kind of university cooperation for what kind of Europe?' Universities not only produce Europe’s intellectual elites and scientific knowledge, but they are also key actors in science diplomacy, regional innovation ecosystems and cultural reproduction. The European Union (EU) is increasingly recognizing this and engages in the steering of European universities, for example through its funding programmes. 📝New content added on Ideas on Europe by JCMS: 'JCMS 20th Anniversary Symposium: What does the Arrival of Planetary Politics tell us about normative power and the European Union?' Readers of the Journal of Common Market Studies may be surprised and perhaps confused to see references to the speculative fiction (SF) film Arrival and ‘planetary politics’ in this symposium of the premier journal for the study of the European Union (EU). What can we learn from a SF film or the unheard-of politics of the planet in our study of EU politics? might be a good question. 🇺🇦🇲🇩What does it actually take to join the EU? Last week, at the 54th UACES (University Association for Contemporary European Studies) in Trento, Italy, it was my privilege to not only chair a fantastic data analysis based panel examining current member states’ attitudes to the bloc with Zuzana Ringlerova and József Dúró but to also speak on an EU enlargement panel representing Young European Movement UK joint with Europinion chaired by Will Kingston-Cox alongside Dr Jan Grzymski and Petra Pavlovicova, discussing Ukraine & Moldova’s performance against accession success criteria. The upshot is; this process has been significantly accelerated for both countries in terms of going from candidate to negotiating status and both were given key reforms that formed the conditions of their status as candidates, such as reducing corruption and improving energy efficiency. Both have performed incredibly well and the door certainly isn’t closing, but opening wider. The EU Partnership Mission, which is a sanctions regime targeting those active in destabilising Moldova for example, has proved its worth in strengthening security and resilience when it comes to hybrid threats. But of course more needs to be done, and a a few elements here include: ✔️Tackling foreign and domestic misinformation; Moldovan society for one is susceptible to Russian-backed propaganda given the pro-Russian Transnistria region ✔️ Strengthening gender equality; progress is happening but it is relative ✔️ Reforming the judiciary ✔️ Environment based resetting policy -particularly for Ukraine Despite absolute logistical chaos on my flight/hotel bookings, (!) I also managed to find time to enjoy other panels, one of my favourites being the 2024 European Parliament Elections: Results and Consequences; examining these elections compared to previous ones in terms of candidate visibility, campaign themes, and voter turnout as well as looking at evolving power dynamics between parties, member states, and EU institutions with speakers: Julie Hassing Nielsen -Ben Crum -Julia Schulte-Cloos -And Julie Smith Thank you to all the organisers, speakers, facilitators and track convenors who worked so hard to make this whole event a resounding success. #UACES #Moldova #Ukraine #Russia #EuropeanUnion #EU #geopolitics #politics #UACES2024

This June, I took part in the UACES Graduate Forum Research Conference 2024, in Amsterdam 🇳🇱 I presented a paper titled "PiS vs EU: how Poland Challenges the Rule of Law of the European Union and Women's Rights" about the breaches made by Poland on the EU rules about the rule of law. I had the incredible opportunity to discuss and share opinions with brilliant minds and amazing people about the future of the EU 20 Years after the "Big Bang enlargement" 🇪🇺 Thanks to this experience, I deepened my knowledge about the challenges the EU faced and is continuing to face to expand its borders. Thank you to the UACES (University Association for Contemporary European Studies) for organising the conference, the Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam (VU Amsterdam) for hosting the event, and Ollie Pilkington for his professionalism and humanity. 👏 Also, a little shout-out to all the participants who shared their work and knowledge with me, creating enriching discussions and exchanges.

It was lovely to see little Olivia at the UACES 54th Annual Conference 2024 in Trento last week with her parents, Marja-Liisa Öberg and Jacob Öberg. This wasn’t Olivia’s first UACES conference, and we hope it won’t be her last! As our community continues to grow, we are committed to making UACES events more inclusive and welcoming for families. 👪 We look forward to seeing more familiar faces (big and small!) at future events. #UACES2024

Hear from our new Executive Director, Kerry Cole, on her impression of her first UACES Annual Conference below ⬇⬇⬇
Membership, non-profit and charity sector leader. I support the people and organisations I work with to succeed.
After taking a moment to pause and reflect about my experience organising and attending my first UACES (University Association for Contemporary European Studies) Annual Conference, I’m not sure there are enough adjectives to fully capture how special the event was. Trento was absolutely stunning, and with nearly 400 people attending, it felt like I had the chance to meet every single one of them over the course of the four days. Here are a few things that truly stood out to me: - UACES delegates foster an environment of rigorous debate and thoughtful feedback, all within the most welcoming and supportive atmosphere I’ve ever experienced. The role of being both a critical friend and mentor is something they take to heart. - There’s no such thing as "too much passion" when it comes to European Studies. The enthusiasm in every session I dropped into was contagious. - The conference program covered a diverse range of important topics from Race and Decolonisation, European Security, Human Mobility and Health to Gender and Sexuality giving attendees a lot to think about. They explored the challenges of European Integration and Identity, dealt with issues of change and uncertainty, and addressed the need to adapt to global shifts. By the end, there was a strong sense of optimism, as everyone reaffirmed their shared commitment to fostering unity, resilience, and innovation in the face of today's socioeconomic and geopolitical dynamics. - I’m particularly excited to see the careers of our Graduate Forum attendees thrive. Watching them grow and contribute was a real highlight for me. - The sense of community at UACES is unmatched. From the moment I joined back in February, I've felt privileged to be welcomed as part of this incredible group. Of course, none of this would have been possible without an amazing team. A huge thank you to Emanuele Massetti, the fantastic events team at Università di Trento, and the student volunteers who worked tirelessly to help us make this conference such a success. To Ollie Pilkington and Katie Kilbourne — what can I say? Your professionalism and unwavering support were instrumental in delivering a flawless event. Our team may not even be a year old yet, but you both completely smashed it. Well done! 💥 Niall Robb, thank you for agreeing to join the team in Trento. The support you provided to me, Ollie and Katie was invaluable. Finally, I owe a big thank you to the UACES Officers: Koen Slootmaeckers, Rosa Maria Fernandez, Simon Usherwood, Professor Toni Haastrup, and Viviane Gravey. Your guidance over the past seven months has been invaluable. And, would you believe it? We’re already planning for Liverpool 2025, and I couldn’t be more excited for what’s to come!

🌍✨Oskar Chmiel, a social science specialist at CASE, recently presented his research at the 54th UACES (University Association for Contemporary European Studies) conference in #Trento! Oskar's presentation focused on the 'nexus' between trade, development and migration, exploring how the EU has attempted to link these areas since the 1990s. While many initiatives aimed to reduce migration through development assistance in low-income countries, his findings showed that the results haven't always met expectations. He offered insights into which policies work and which may need to be rethought. 📊 🔗Read more about the conference: https://lnkd.in/eSv4vnNW #UACES #EUpolicies #Migration #Trade #Development #Research Participation was made possible by funding from the National Science Centre under the Sonatina program; project number 2023/48/C/HS5/00306.
