📣 🌳 WWF Forest Expectations Paper for CBD COP16 and UNFCCC COP29 out: 🤝 In 2021, 145 government leaders committed to work collectively to halt and reverse forest loss by 2030 as part of the Glasgow Leaders Declaration on Forests and Land Use. 🔴 ❌ Just five years away from that deadline, the picture is bleak: 6.37 million hectares of forest were permanently lost around the world in 2023, according to the Forest Declaration Assessment. The world is off track to achieve the goal of eliminating gross deforestation by 2030. The new Living Planet Report shows that some of our planet’s most critical forests, such as the Amazon, are on the verge of tipping points, which would have severe repercussions globally. 🐼 ➡ Ahead of the UN Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) conference (COP16) and the climate change conference (COP29), WWF is calling on a significant increase in finance and investment for forests, greater accountability in tracking, monitoring and reporting of pledges as well as setting ambitious national targets, and swift implementation of existing commitments. 📣 ✅ 🤝 The WWF Expectations for Forests at COP16 and COP29 paper outlines our call to action for forests, with recommendations on actions needed by the public and private sector to scale up action. NEW REPORT: Our planet’s forests are in crisis: 6.37 million hectares of deforestation occurred in 2023, which puts the world starkly off track for achieving the goal of eliminating gross deforestation by 2030. Today, I want to acknowledge a pivotal moment for WWF as we launch the 15th edition of our flagship publication, the Living Planet Report. This report offers a critical overview of the current state of global biodiversity and the health of our planet, and this edition reveals a system in peril. Climate change and nature loss are propelling our planet towards dangerous and potentially irreversible tipping points, and these tipping points are directly linked to species decline and ecosystem degradation. The Living Planet Index - an indicator of the state of global biological diversity - shows an alarming 73% decline in the average size of monitored wildlife populations over the past 50 years. I find this to be a truly devastating reality, as it signifies that in my lifetime, we have experienced such a significant loss to our natural world. The facts should cause alarm for all who care about the state of our natural world, and as we look towards global milestones like COP16, we stand at a critical crossroads, where urgent decisions will determine our planet's future. Our planet is under strain, and the current responses from political decision makers are insufficient to halt and reverse nature loss by 2030. The 2024 Living Planet Report makes it clear - what happens in the next five years will determine the future of life on Earth. We know what must be done, and we know how to do it. Now, we must accelerate action. We have global commitments like the Paris Agreement, the Global Biodiversity Framework, and the Sustainable Development Goals all with targets or requirements for 2030 - but commitments alone are not enough. Achieving success will require a collective approach from the whole of society, and we must transform how we structure our energy, food, and financial systems. We can still avoid the tipping points, nature can still recover and temperatures can be stabilized, but we must act now, push for change and hold each other accountable. By confronting this challenge together, we can secure a living planet for current and future generations.
