The fight for the Congo Basin is on—and the stakes are higher than ever. Absorbing SIX TIMES more carbon dioxide than the Amazon rainforest, the Congo Basin is an irreplaceable natural treasure and lifeline for the world’s climate. In fact, the value of this carbon storage alone is estimated at $55 billion! Yet, almost a third of this previous ecosystem has been lost since the turn of the century, and up to 5% more is lost with each passing year, mainly due to mining and unregulated and illegal logging. Failing to stop this would bring devastating environmental, social, and security impacts to millions in Africa and across the planet. Working together with partners, TRAFFIC is on the front lines of tackling these threats —building stronger conservation networks, supporting law enforcement, and reducing illegal trade. This article by Denis Mahonghol, our Director for Central Africa, calls for stronger monitoring and shared incentives for all involved to protect our planet’s ‘second lung’. 🌍🌳 Full story in comments 👇 #CongoBasin #GlobalSecurity #Conservation 📸 Andrew Walmsley/Traffic

With less than 6 years to meet the targets set by the Global Biodiversity Framework, we need to work together to accelerate action. Our current collective efforts as a global community fall far short of what is needed. The basis for this course correction needs to be ambitious revised NBSAPs and strong accountability mechanisms. We urge Parties to conclude the NBSAP revision process as soon as possible and no later than by the end of 2025. Thanks Kirsten Schuijt for reading joint NGO statement at COP16 Colombia High Level Segment from TRAFFIC, WWF, Conservation International, The Nature Conservancy BirdLife International, ClientEarth, and Campaign for Nature. Working together, we will secure a nature positive future.

NEW unlikely heroes in the fight against wildlife crime: giant African rats! 🐀💚 Scientists have found that African giant pouched rats can accurately sniff out illegally trafficked wildlife products like rhino horn and pangolin scales. Richard Scobey, TRAFFIC’s Executive Director, told the Financial Times: “The global trafficking of wild species is expanding, driving many species towards extinction and threatening global security and public health… Using animals to help detect illegal produce is well-tested and can very helpfully supplement a wider law enforcement strategy." With relatively short training times, these cost-effective and highly skilled rodents can help law enforcement stay one step ahead of criminal networks.
