Thank you Rachel Cernansky writing this great article for Vogue Business putting the fashion industry’s aim to tackle climate change into the wider context referencing the Cambridge Institute for Sustainability Leadership (CISL) discussion paper Survival of the Fittest: From ESG to Competitive Sustainability: There is an important role for business here – to take control of the story from those seeking to defend the status quo for personal gain - and make the case that swift action on sustainability challenges will be good for economies, for jobs, for security, for health. Beyond this there is a role in building a compelling vision for a better, more prosperous, cleaner and fairer future. Business knows how to market products; it now needs to market sustainability as a social and economic benefit. And it needs to paint the alternative to action as deeply negative for the economy and for people. In doing this, progressive companies cannot afford to be naive or tentative. Incumbents defending the status quo are aggressive and effective in resisting change, and in creating doubt and division. To date, progressive businesses have advocated co-operatively, gently and cautiously. Many have opted to step back and keep quiet in the face of recent aggressive backlash. This must change. A more robust and interventionist approach by a critical mass of businesses is essential now. Thanks also to all those contributing direclty or indirectly to this article and their tireless efforts swimming against the tide Francois Souchet Maxine Bédat Sandrine Dixson-Declève Rachel Arthur Lindsay Hooper Paul Gilding John Elkington Nicolaj Reffstrup

𝗙𝗨𝗟𝗟 𝗣𝗔𝗚𝗘 𝗔𝗗 𝗜𝗡 𝗧𝗛𝗘 𝗡𝗬𝗧 𝗧𝗢𝗗𝗔𝗬 #𝗧𝘂𝗿𝗻𝗧𝗵𝗲𝗣𝗮𝗴𝗲𝗢𝗻𝗖𝗹𝗶𝗺𝗮𝘁𝗲 Throughout history, #women have led and responded with courage and vision, from the forefront of every crisis. Today, we are driving the transformation towards a cleaner #future. This is why, I am proud to have joined 83 other women from around the world, calling on the #UnitedStates and global leaders to turn the page and move forward on climate change in the run-up to #COP29 Azerbaijan. We have seen hope re-emerge at the #UnitedNations this week, as global leaders reaffirmed their commitment to act on the climate crisis, transition away from polluting fossil fuels, and back an overhaul of the international financial architecture. While the U.S. has made significant progress in advancing clean #energy investments and moving forward its #climate agenda, we recognize that much more is needed to slash emissions and rebuild global trust in a year of unprecedented weather extremes. The U.S. has an opportunity to demonstrate strong stewardship in upcoming international climate negotiations, leading with the #vision and #ambition this country has always been known and respected for. Today we are here to say: America, we stand ready to back you as you act on #climatechange. 🌱 The Sustainable Angle #FutureFabricsExpo reflections + Women in Innovation: Purple Plaque unveiling celebration announcement & event at LCF 🟣 As part of my personal and professional long-term relationship with Sustainable Angle, I was delighted to speak at their most recent 2024 Future Fabrics Expo Seminar Series in London. Joining me on the panel were the incredible Lucy Shea, Sarah Kent and Shailja Dubé. The Expo has long been a vital marker in the calendar of designers, journalists, students, tutors, sector leaders and other creatives, but this year, it broke new ground. It changes what sourcing means in fashion, and it changes what it means to source, design and make. I am super proud that, each year, I see what our graduates from #MAFashionFutures are shaping and the change that they are leading. The discussion, the stands, the conversations and the energy at the Expo marked a move from awareness raising to the challenging, necessary, vital work of imagining otherwise than propping up the status quo of fashion as consumption, extraction and exploitation. This time, I was especially delighted to catch up with one of our MA Fashion Futures graduates and Centre for Sustainable Fashion and Kering award winners, Dian-Jen Lin (left), who formed, co-founded and is CEO of Post Carbon Lab and Namrata (right) who is working with her. Dj is, very aptly, a Women in Innovation Awardee, receiving a Purple Plaque from Innovate UK to recognise the groundbreaking work that she is doing. Post Carbon Lab is a biotech company offering circular & regenerative microbial colouration and finishing services to textile and polymer supply chains. Dj’s work is a brilliant example of the future of fashion - post-carbon, post-consumerism, post-exploitation fashion. With thousands of blue plaques scattered across the UK, fewer than one in seven honour women—a stark reminder of the historical underrepresentation of female achievements. In contrast, the Purple Plaque initiative aims to shift this narrative by recognising and celebrating the innovative contributions of women like Lin, who have made significant strides in their respective fields. In a historic celebration of female leadership and entrepreneurship, London College of Fashion, University of the Arts London (LCF) and the Centre for Sustainable Fashion (CSF), in partnership with Innovate UK, are set to unveil this Purple Plaque commemorating Dian-Jen Lin, at our upcoming event: 🗓️ Date: Friday 18th October, 4 - 6pm 📍 Location: London College of Fashion (LCF), 105 Carpenters Road, Stratford, London, E20 2AR 🎟️ Free tickets available to book This event is open for all to join, and we encourage all those interested to celebrate this momentous occasion! 🌟 🔗Click the link below to book your tickets & for more information. https://lnkd.in/ghg2w4_6 #CentreForSustainableFashion #CSF #LondonCollegeOfFashion #LCF #SustainableFashion #MAFashionFutures #MAFF #PostCarbonLab #InnovateUK #PurplePlaque

Sharing our key insights and takeaways from New York Climate Week #NYCW
Fashion stepped it up at New York Climate Week this year - it was heartening to see the fashion industry hosting various events and talks dedicated to tackling climate impacts dedicated to tackling climate impacts. A few takeaways and highlights: • The climate crisis and its extreme weather events will be massively impacting earnings and profits of fashion brands, but this seems not enough understood let alone taken into account in long term business strategies. • Wide agreement amongst speakers and attendees that while taking action means complex decisions requiring changes that come with costs attached, inaction will be far more expensive! Many such decisions bring efficiencies that are good for business • We know what is wrong, we know the solutions, but political will is missing and urgent changes need to happen urgently such as stopping the trillions of dollars in subsidies given yearly to the fossil fuel industry. Systemic change is necessary if we are really serious about meeting the Paris agreement targets • Textile Exchange's upcoming report Reimagining Growth promises to deliver true insights addressing oversupply, overproduction and overconsumption: sure to reinforce the messages heard throughout this week. It seems the timing is perfect for our NYC edition of the Future Fabrics Expo, held between November 19th - 20th where we are bringing thousands of sustainable and innovative material solutions for fashion and design industries that offer true innovative alternatives to the polluting materials still predominantly used by fashion today! A shoutout to the many talks & events we attended, and fellow advocates we were able to connect and re-connect with throughout the course of the week: • Solutions House by Futerra, with Lucy Shea, Ali Weinstein • Oceans.Climate.Life hosted by Parley for the Oceans with Cyrill Gutsch, Hannes Schoenegger • Action Speaks at The Nest Climate Campus with Simon Henzell-Thomas (he/his), Ludvig Liljekvist • Breakthrough Materials for a Low Carbon Future by Closed Loop Partners with Kate Daly, Stephanie Grotta • Textile Exchange x Tapestry with Claire Bergkamp, Logan T Duran, Sandrine Dixson-Declève, Sarah Kent, Rachel Arthur, Sophia Li, Helen Crowley • Vogue Business Fashion Futures with Dennis Nobelius, Eva von Alvensleben, Annabelle Georgina Hutter • The Explorers Club with Dana Davis (she/her), Elizabeth (Liz) Ricketts • Stella McCartney with Indré Rockefeller, Luke Haverhals, Roni GamZon, and book signing in support of Nemonte Nenquimo's We Will Be Jaguars • Renewing Fashion: Clean Energy and Circular Economy hosted by Columbia University with Tricia Carey, Nicolaj Reffstrup, Maxine Bédat And Eva Kruse, Inka Apter, Nicole Rycroft, Christine Goulay, Yuly Fuentes-Medel Ph.D.
