As the Legal Services Board gears up to launch enforcement action over the handling of Axiom Ince’s collapse, Katy Dowell zeroes in on the key takeaways from its long-awaited review.
Responsible for Horizon from The Lawyer, data-rich, strategic insight helping the legal sector navigate the path ahead. Delivered to thousands of commercial lawyers every morning at 7am.
The Legal Services Board has published its report into the SRA's handling of the collapse of Axiom Ince. The review reveals a series of missed opportunities to uncover the alleged misappropriation of £60m in client monies believed to have dated back to 2019. The SRA says the review makes recommendations about what it should have done with the benefit of "hindsight". "In our view," it says, "it is unrealistic to expect regulation to prevent all harms." There are no winners in this ongoing scandal. The reverberations will be widely felt, particularly if the SRA decides to take up the far reaching proposals put forward by the LSB to mitigate the risk of another such collapse occurring.
