About us

The BRC’s purpose is to make a positive difference to the retail industry and the customers it serves, today and in the future. Retail is an exciting, dynamic and diverse industry. It is a driving force in our economy, a hotbed of innovation and the UK’s largest private sector employer. Retailers touch the lives of millions of people every day, supporting the vibrancy of the communities they operate in. The industry today is going through a period of profound change. Technology is transforming how people shop; costs are increasing; and growth in consumer spending is slow. Retailing will continue to evolve and advance. Online retail will continue to grow as retailers invest in new emerging technologies; there will be fewer stores and those stores remaining will offer new experiences; there will be fewer, but better jobs and a career in retail in the future will be very different to today. We are committed to ensuring the industry thrives through this period of transformation. We tell the story of retail, work with our members to drive positive change and use our expertise and influence to create an economic and policy environment that enables retail businesses to thrive and consumers to benefit. We do this in a way that delivers value back to our members, justifying their investment in the BRC. This membership comprises over 5,000 businesses delivering £180bn of retail sales and employing over one and half million employees. www.brc.org.uk Twitter: @the_brc

Chief Executive at British Retail Consortium, making a difference for retail

🌍 Reflecting on Climate Action Week 2024 🌍  ‘Time to have a braver conversation about sustainability and net-zero.’ That was ex Tesco CEO and current WWF-UK Chair Sir Dave Lewis’ message to retail leaders last night in a speech that rounded off our 2024 Climate Action Week at The Form Rooms.    It was great to hear insight from Dave about his own experience of embedding sustainability into the operating model of a business as well as hear his to call to action for the retail industry going forward.    Dave challenged retailers to ‘step forward and win’ instead of ‘sitting back and avoiding losing’ and talked about the opportunity retail has to be a leader due to the industry’s scale and reach. He’s right. Retail is in a unique position to lead the charge against climate change, and Dave’s speech reminded us of the urgency and responsibility we all share. The path ahead will be challenging, but the commitments and actions taken by so many of our members already show that we are ready to make a real difference.    Some of that commitment was seen by great attendance from many across the industry at our Climate Action Week webinars. We heard about ESG Reporting, Carbon Reduction, Net Zero Buildings, Decarbonising Supply Chains, Green Claims and Sustainable Design. Thanks to our partners who provided such valuable insight over the week.    This was capped off with a CEO Exchange Forum yesterday. Forum for the Future facilitated a great discussion on the complexity of the context and how retailers collectively and individually can implement an effective net zero strategy. It was great to hear ideas about how the becoming future fit, think about business culture and need for ongoing collaboration through bodies such as the BRC.  I think my overarching takeaway from this week would be that sustainability is not just a buzzword; it’s an integral part of the future of our businesses, and a necessity for our communities and our planet. Together, we can create a more sustainable, resilient industry —one that meets the needs of today without compromising tomorrow. 💬 Let’s continue the conversation—what actions are you taking to push the sustainability agenda forward in your organizations?  #CAW2024 #Sustainability #RetailResponsibility #BRC #Buyintoretail

We were delighted to host a fringe event yesterday at #LabourConference24 on how business rates reform can unlock increased retail investment in people and places across the country. 💬 Exchequer Secretary James Murray MP - who has business rates in his ministerial portfolio - kicked off proceedings, reinforcing the government’s commitment to reform the current system and outlining Labour’s willingness to work with the retail industry to drive economic growth. 📜 The discussion then moved to the material impact business rates have on the viability of shops and retail investment. Nick Stowe, CEO of Monsoon Accessorize talked about business rates playing a role in store closures while CEO of Matalan, Jo Whitfield, said the current system was a ‘real barrier’ to investment and was holding her company back. 📊 Giles Wilkes, Specialist Partner at Flint Global, talked about the social impact of retail which the new government must realise. ‘The blight of empty high streets’ not only has economic consequences but implications for society as a whole. He also talked of how the retail industry has a right to highlight the unfair tax burden it faces and it is the role of The Treasury to listen to the evidence, run the numbers and make decisions as a result. 💰 BRC CEO, Helen Dickinson, spoke about our ask of the Chancellor at this budget, a 20% Retail Rates Corrector - a 20% adjustment to the rates bills of all retail properties. This would immediately address the ‘disproportionate tax burden’ which the industry currently faces compared to other industries. We now eagerly await the Chancellor’s budget next month to see reform in action. 📑 A big thanks to Business Editor of The Sun, Ashley Armstrong, for hosting this insightful and thought provoking event! 💭 #LabourConference24 #BuyIntoRetail #businessrates

Did you listen to the Chancellor's speech at #LabourConference24 today. 📢 Rt Hon Rachel Reeves described the business rates system as 'outdated' and pledged to 'overhaul' it. 💬 For too long, business rates in their current form have thwarted investment and led to store closures up and down the country. 📉 Interested to hear more about why the business rates system is now outdated and what reform could look like. Then join us tomorrow at 13:00 in Room Albert 5, Hilton Hotel, Liverpool for an insightful discussion on exactly that. 📅 Ashley Armstrong will be joined by a panel of experts; Helen Dickinson, Jo Whitfield, Nick Stowe, Giles Wilkes and James Murray MP to discuss how Labour can work with industry to create reforms that incentivise investment, lead to more sustainable properties and unlock growth in communities across the UK. 💭 #BuyIntoRetail #LabourConference24
