AMR, or Antimicrobial Resistance, is a natural phenomenon where infection-causing microorganisms (germs) such as bacteria, viruses, fungi, and parasites evolve to become resistant to the antimicrobial medicines that were designed to treat them. These antimicrobial medicines include antibiotics, antifungals, antivirals and antiparasitics. AMR is a global health emergency, yet most patients and the public have never heard of it before. It is important that we can all play a role in protecting these life-saving medicines so they continue to work when we need them most. We've created this short video which explains the basics of AMR. Promoting patient & public advocacy, community & awareness to mobilise action against Antimicrobial Resistance (AMR)
About us
Founded by Vanessa Carter, a patient advocate who survived a highly-resistant MRSA infection, The AMR Narrative is a registered charity that works to develop advocacy capacity among patients and the public to improve participation and mobilise action against Antimicrobial Resistance (AMR). As patients and consumers, pet owners, parents, or carers we play a pivotal role in advocating for the appropriate use of antimicrobial medicines. By protecting antimicrobial medicines in humans, animals, the environment, and food sectors we are ensuring a more sustainable future for everyone especially those who are most vulnerable to untreatable infections. Tackling Antimicrobial Resistance (AMR) from a One Health approach is important to human health, patients and people. On the 5th and 6th of September 2024, Dr Francesca Chiara, Chair of the Board of The AMR Narrative, moderated a One Health session at the World Anti-Microbial Resistance Congress in Philadelphia. Understanding that AMR is not confined to hospitals or healthcare settings is key to grasping the full scale of this global health threat. Bhakti Chavan is an AMR Survivor from India. She was diagnosed with extensively drug-resistant tuberculosis (XDR-TB) in 2017 and required long-term treatment with daily painful injections and medications that had severe side effects. Fortunately, she was able to access newer medicines through an international NGO, as the national health system was not providing them at the time. Even with the newer treatments, she had to take a break from her studies and social life for more than a year, enduring repeated hospital admissions. Today, she is a powerful advocate for other patients battling drug-resistant tuberculosis. Together with the European Patients' Forum, we released a statement last week on the Declaration of the UN General Assembly High-level Meeting on Antimicrobial Resistance (AMR). We call for more patient and civil society participation in AMR policies. According to MEP Stine Bosse, patient organisations must work together with policy-makers to achieve real change. Last week, our Executive Director and Founder, Vanessa Carter joined by one of our trustees Wendy Thompson attended the United Nations General Assembly High-Level Meeting in New York. After speaking at several side events including the Fleming Initiative's Disruptive Innovation in AMR meeting, as well as in a panel discussion at the Health and Global Policy Institute (HGPI) in partnership with AMR Multi-Stakeholder Partnership Platform, CARB-X and Global Antibiotic R&D Partnership (GARDP) and Danish Consulate General in New York (Denmark In New York) Sustainability Summit addressing the Global Health Challenge of AMR in partnership with the Novo Nordisk Foundation, we participated in the panel discussions at the United Nations headquarters. We also had the opportunity to partner with ReAct - Action on Antibiotic Resistance for a side event which focused on creating community leaders titled "From People to Leaders". We had several key asks which included the active participation of patients, carers, survivors and patient organisations in the fight to tackle AMR and developing meaningful mechanisms, including funding to enable their involvement. #theAMRnarrative #UNGA79 #AMR #AntimicrobialResistance #PatientsIncluded #PatientAdvocates

The AMR Narrative and The European Patients' Forum welcome the emphasis on tackling Antimicrobial Resistance (AMR) through a comprehensive approach highlighted during the UN High-Level Meeting on AMR on 26th September 2024. 📢 However, we call for stronger patient and civil society participation in national AMR policies. We call on decision-makers to prioritise health literacy, community engagement, and concrete mechanisms and resources to make this happen. We're thrilled to be in New York for the United Nations High-Level Meeting on Antimicrobial Resistance (AMR)! Global leaders are coming together to address one of the most pressing health challenges of our time. The side events have been a hive of activity, discussing everything from innovative antibiotic research to sustainable health systems. This week we are asking policymakers and global leaders to develop meaningful mechanisms to include the voice of patients, carers and survivors in their solutions to address AMR. We're not just dealing with numbers; we're fighting for people, and ensuring these precious, life-saving medicines are accessible and work when they are needed. AMR is a battle we all share. Let's keep pushing forward together. Meet one of our charity's trustees Wendy Thompson as well as our Founder and Patient Advocate, Vanessa Carter at the UN this week. We will be taking part in a variety of side events as well as the panel discussions at the main meeting on the 26th. #theAMRnarrative #AMR #AntimicrobialResistance #UNGA79
