We are a leading international sustainable tourism organisation dedicated to ensuring that tourism has a positive impact on destination communities. We work with governments, community groups and tourism businesses for fairer, climate-positive tourism. We work towards tourism that is fair for destination communities. Tourism can catalyze growth in the local economy, providing good quality jobs and opportunities for enterprise, supporting conservation, and improving quality of life. But if it is not managed well, tourism can burden local communities and environments, creating long-term problems for residents. These negative impacts are often not identified until they become significant issues. We partner with public sector authorities and businesses to help them work together to become destination stewards. We aim to give residents a stronger voice in tourism planning and management, and we build knowledge of the actual costs and benefits of tourism to local communities. We improve skills and know-how, supporting destinations to build back better in the wake of the pandemic by tackling key issues such as lack of market access for local businesses to tourism opportunities. We work towards climate-positive tourism. Climate change is already harming tourism destinations, with wildfires, coral bleaching, drought, storms and hurricanes all increasing in severity and frequency, as well as a growing threat from rising sea levels. Tourism accounts for around 8%-11% of global carbon emissions; unless we act now, the industry’s emissions will keep growing. Join us as we create a better future for tourism destinations, accelerating change towards a more balanced tourism model through advocacy, training, demonstrating good practice, and enabling collaboration between the many tourism stakeholders. Climate Justice in Tourism: A reflection I am happy to share my thoughts based on the recently published article by The Travel Foundation about climate justice in tourism. Climate justice is a cause that I hold dearly in my heart because it embodies intersectionalism which is a lens much needed in climate action. In simple terms, climate justice is an approach to climate action that acknowledges that climate change impacts people/regions differently and there is no "one size fits all" approach to solving these effects. I'm happy that the discussion is taking shape in tourism discourse. As an economic activity, tourism can both be a curse and a blessing to destinations. It is lauded for economic benefits, social empowerment and environmental conservation/preservation, but tourism, if not practiced sustainably, can be detrimental to these dimensions of society as well. Most climate conversations in tourism center environmental viability, not knowing that a disruption in the environment causes a ripple detrimental effect to social well-being that in turn increases marginalization of vulnerable groups such as women and children. For instance, drought in Northern Kenya is likely to cause food shortage and lead to domestic squabbles at home due to lack of food. Tasked with unpaid care work, women bear the brunt of forgoing food for the sake of the family. And, did you know that tourism-induced climate change can also lead to forced migration of communities? This goes to Island destinations experiencing a rise in sea level, making communities leave their homes and land forever. Identity and access to livelihood opportunities are also lost in the process. To such people, I agree when the article terms it, "a fight for survival." How then can a just transition be achieved in tourism especially when only 1% of people travel every year and majority of them from the global North? How can vulnerable destinations adapt to climate change when they have limited access to resources to do so? how can the tourism sector account to its emissions when the statistic of air travel, which accounts for 75% of total emissions in tourism is omitted by the IPCC, who then do we hold accountable, the origin or the destination or the carrier owner? as a structural adjustment program, does tourism need to set up a frequent flyer levy that can boost resilience of destinations or should there be climate finance set up by UN-tourism as a reparation to the loss and damage experienced by communities? What about tourism businesses, should the focus be on business resilience in times of crisis or on community resilience? These reflective questions together with additional chapter questions in the article spark a lot of critical thinking for the future of tourism. "Climate justice is an inclusive approach to climate action that centres the voices and needs of communities most impacted by climate change. Indigenous, Black and other marginalized communities are particularly vulnerable to the severe impacts of climate change". One of the experts we interviewed is quoted in the article & the report on which it is based: "As, Daniela Subtil, the network co-ordinator for Stay Grounded, a network of organizations promoting alternatives to aviation to address climate change, said: “The impacts of the climate crisis that aviation contributes to are being felt… by marginalised, historically and systematically marginalised peoples. Yet there is a very tiny percentage of the world’s population flying.” Tourism needs to address: #justice, #inequity, #communities, #justfutures ⚡ And the good news is some in the tourism industry are addressing this issue, but there is much more work to be done. 📖 The report offers a set of recommendations as a start.
