🗯️ 'How many times have you automatically reached for a plastic bag at the supermarket, even though you have reusable bags at home?' We're all creatures of habit, but when it comes to sustainability and making real, tangible progress, our tendency towards convenience can be a barrier. In Mark Hauser, our Applied Behavioural Scientist's latest blog, he discusses how we may break these habits and forge towards a more sustainable path. 💡 ‘Where could the £2 fare take you?’. When we worked with Go-Ahead for their £2 fare campaign, we crafted our solution using behavioural science. This helped us connect with a broad range of audiences, and craft a really clear and compelling message. The results? 'Out of 1,000 people surveyed, 53 percent said they were aware of the new fare, with two-thirds of regular bus users aware of it.' You can read our full case study below 👇 #GoAhead #CreativeCampaign #BehaviouralScience

👥 AI is reshaping the designer’s toolkit, freeing time for creative work by taking over repetitive tasks. Decades ago, Thomas Watson Jr. said computers would reduce “drudgerous, repetitive, non-creative tasks.” Today, AI lets us go further: acting as a “co-pilot” to accelerate our ideas and push designs to new levels. 💡 When applied thoughtfully, AI helps designers create more effective outcomes by supporting creativity and imagination. It’s not about replacing human skill; it’s about enhancing what we can do. A few thoughts from our director Cliff Ettridge on reports of rising sickness levels among workers in Germany.
Fascinating from the FT today. German business executives reporting that high levels of sick leave are damaging competitiveness. Workers missed an average of 19.4 days because of illness last year, and the FT report that the trend is likely to continue upward. Compare that to the UK where workers took an average of only 4.4 sick days, the fourth lowest in Europe (but still a rising trend even in the UK.) But sickness is not something spread over time. There are spikes. The website One Advanced report that 53% of sick leave in Europe tends to happen in January. So what can you do? One German business leader has said the labour force had become “too spoilt and too self-confident”, suggesting a knee jerk response to the situation. According to analysis by the Ulster University Economic Policy Centre (UUEPC) employees who are more likely to work from home have lower levels of sickness absence. But that can sometimes mean they are working when they should be recovering. In these case it’s still necessary for managers to be equipped to have the right conversations with workers. To recognise when they are struggling, why, and do something about it. Showing care today is far more likely to result in discretionary effort tomorrow. According to People Management the most common cause of absence in 2022 as reported by the Office for National Statistics included accidents, poisonings, infectious diseases, skin disorders or diabetes, making up 26 per cent of days lost. A further 24 per cent was down to coughs and sneezes. Accidents, Germs and Diabetes! These are areas where process, education and access to the right food and services make a difference. Encouraging fitness, protecting workers with safety practices that put them first, and showing what a healthy diet looks like is key. So potentially it is still about businesses taking an active interest in the safety, health and well being of workers where dents can be made in sickness levels. https://lnkd.in/e3XbeQbY

🎃 It’s Halloween – and there’s nothing spookier than a carved pumpkin! Or is there? Food waste is a big, scary problem. Especially disregarded, scorched pumpkins with garishly carved faces. Fruit and Veg produce the most amount of waste, and post-Halloween pumpkins in landfills cause a big problem. According to research from Hubbub, decomposing pumpkins will create methane, which has 20 times the global warming effects of carbon dioxide... So, what can we do to avoid this issue? 👻 1. Get a smaller pumpkin - big pumpkins are specially grown for Halloween. Small ones are sweeter and tastier to eat anyway. Why not make a pumpkin stew? Or a pumpkin pie? 2. Decorate your pumpkin, don't carve it. That way you can use it at a later date for cooking. 3. Tell your friends, loved ones and colleagues. Share recipes and fun creative ways to avoid food waste. As we work towards becoming B-Corps accredited, one of the key things we've noticed is the importance of sharing ideas with other stakeholders and businesses. If we change the way we think, in small incremental ways, then we can work towards a better future. Motion by our wonderful designer, Megan Wright. ✨ You can read more about Hubbub's research here: https://lnkd.in/euvER5Xb #HalloweenFoodWaste #PumpkinRecipe #SustainableHalloween

💡 Design isn’t just about aesthetics; it’s a problem-solving mindset that uses cognitive and creative skills. According to the World Economic Forum’s Future of Jobs 2023 report, skills like analytical and creative thinking are projected to be top in-demand by 2027. Analytical thinking tops the list, comprising 9.1% of core skills identified by companies. Creative thinking ranks just below, followed by resilience, flexibility, and curiosity. As workplaces face constant disruption, these design skills will be essential for navigating and maximizing new opportunities. Design equips us with the flexibility to adapt and the tools to innovate in a changing world. 🌐 Read our Executive Creative Director - Dave Recchia's blog here: https://lnkd.in/eWNw4mZp #FutureSkills #CreativeThinking #DesignIndustry #Innovation #ProblemSolving
