About us

Over 88,000 people survive a stroke every year in the UK, but surviving a stroke is just the start of a long and gruelling recovery journey. Mums, dads, grandparents, young people, even children – anyone can have a stroke, and its impact is traumatic. Brain damage, caused by a stroke, can leave survivors unable to move, see, speak or even swallow.    The Stroke Association is the only charity in the UK providing life-long support for all stroke survivors and their families. We provide tailored support to tens of thousands of stroke survivors each year, fund vital scientific research, and campaign to secure the best care for everyone affected by stroke. Anyone affected by stroke can visit stroke.org.uk or call our dedicated Stroke Support Helpline on 0303 3033 100 for information, guidance or a chat when times are tough. www.stroke.org.uk Stroke Association - Finding strength through support Registered charity no. 211015 After a stroke, being strong is not a choice. A huge congratulations to stroke survivor and volunteer, Al who has won The John Voaden Volunteer of the Year Award, as part of The Queen Elizabeth Hospital King's Lynn NHS Foundation Trust’s 2024 Team QEH Awards! Al is a marvellous gentleman who volunteers for the Stroke Association on West Raynham ward (Stroke Unit) and at the charity’s community groups. After recovering from the stroke he had in 2013, he decided he wanted to give something back. A keen artist himself, Al has been running the art therapy workshops in his local community, these workshops support stroke survivors to meet new people and build their confidence. He is pictured here on the stroke ward and with two of our stroke support coordinators, Ness and Laura at a fundraising exhibition that took place in Thornam, Norfolk, last weekend. Al has become a regular volunteer on the ward. Linking in with the therapy team on the ward for suitable patients, he goes to talk to the stroke survivors and their families, offering support, kindness, and a listening ear. We are so thankful to #volunteers like Al, who enable us to help stroke survivors find strength through support. 💜

Congratulations to stroke survivor Clodagh Dunlop for receiving an MBE at Windsor Castle last week for her work campaigning to reform stroke services in Northern Ireland. Clodagh had a brain stem stroke in 2015 which left her with locked-in syndrome. Since then, Clodagh has worked tirelessly to campaign with our charity to use her experience to call for better care, support and services for stroke survivors in Northern Ireland – and she played a crucial part in our #SavingBrains campaign, calling for improved access to thrombectomy services across the UK. Thank you, Clodagh for being a voice for fellow stroke survivors in Northern Ireland and beyond!

On average, two-thirds of people experience communication difficulties, or aphasia, soon after a stroke. One of the biggest challenges in places like shops, restaurants and banks is that many people don't know enough about aphasia and how they can help to make communication easier, but the right tools can make all the difference. We are thrilled to have worked in partnership with Nationwide Building Society on their important Speak Easy scheme. We hope it will provide customers with the appropriate support and guidance and give them confidence when visiting their local branch.

We're committed to making sure all of our customers can access our banking services, so we're rolling out Speak Easy cards to all 605 of our branches. Each card has a commonly used banking phrase or request with a picture to show what the card means, and can be used as an alternative to speaking. What a fantastic day at a sunny Stormont with Stroke Association. A privilege to be presenting our #SavingBrains petition at the NI Assembly with stroke survivors Clodagh, Paul and Kim all of which are fantastic campaigners on thrombectomy. The petition was signed by over 3,500 people who are saying it's time to make sure everyone who can benefit from this game changing treatment is able to do so. Today's report from Lord Darzi shows care for cardiovascular disease, including stroke, to be going in the wrong direction.   Without action, the UK will see a 60% increase in first-time strokes over 20 years – costing the Government and the NHS £75 billion. The Government must #MakeStrokeAPriority. Thrombectomy alone could save the NHS £73m a year if the number of patients receiving the miracle treatment rises. The upcoming 10-year Health Plan is a key opportunity to prioritise stroke and improve patients' lives, right across the stroke care pathway – from prevention to treatment to rehab.   The Government must seize the chance to make cardiovascular disease and stroke a priority now.

Welcome to our new Medical Director, Professor Deb Lowe!   We are thrilled to announce that Prof. Lowe joins the Stroke Association today, as our very first Medical Director. As the former NHSE National Clinical Director for stroke, a consultant stroke physician and geriatrician at the Wirral University Teaching Hospital and the National Clinical Lead for the GIRFT stroke programme, Prof Lowe will provide strategic clinical advice to the Stroke Association, strengthening our clinical voice, and helping us test new approaches to advocacy and system leadership for stroke.   Juliet Bouverie OBE, Chief Executive of the Stroke Association said: ‘We are thrilled that Professor Lowe is joining our charity today to provide us with clinical advice on our strategic priorities and support us in bringing the voice of healthcare professionals into our work. The role will help us to ensure that we’re making the biggest possible impact for stroke survivors.   ‘We hugely appreciate the support that Professor Lowe has given to our charity and to stroke patients throughout her career, by driving change in the health system to improve the lives of thousands of people affected by stroke. We look forward to her continuing this great work with us at the Stroke Association.
