As we celebrate #BlackHistoryMonth, we're echoing the theme of Reclaiming Narratives, and this year we have a particular focus on #BeingVisible. We believe that is important to highlight the contribution of our Black psychiatrists, the experiences of people from diverse Black communities using mental health services, and celebrate the achievements and contributions of Black people to society. To mark this year's celebration you can read this blog on the positive reclaiming of narrative by Consultant Psychiatrist Dr Uju Ugochukwu. 🖥➡️ https://lnkd.in/eM_4mJzj

Tragically, many psychiatrists will lose a patient to suicide at some point in their career, and the experience can feel particularly traumatic. A consequence of this is that many psychiatrists experience mental health problems and withdraw from family, friends and colleagues. In some cases, it causes them to leave the mental health sector altogether. Withdrawal is likely to damage emotional wellbeing, which will only make symptoms worse. That’s why RCPsych has produced guidance for psychiatrists and their employers after a patient suicide. Our resource for psychiatrists explains how they can take care of themselves, and outlines the importance of staying connected with loved ones, and peer-to-peer support, particularly during an inquest. 📘 https://lnkd.in/eW_-G__Q We have also produced a framework for mental health trusts and training organisations. We encourage all mental health trusts and training organisations to adopt its recommendations, to deliver effective pastoral support to staff. 📘 https://lnkd.in/eW_-G__Q

The National Audit of Dementia is a clinical audit programme looking at quality of care received by people with dementia in general hospitals. We have published a second report looking at access and waiting times, treatment, and post-diagnostic support for people with dementia in community-based Memory Assessment Services. The report shows that the average waiting time from referral to diagnosis has increased to 151 days since previous reporting in 2022, with a large variation in average waiting times between services of 44 to 347 days. Wait times were longer for people in areas rated as more deprived on the Index of Multiple Deprivation. The report also finds wide variation in patients in each service receiving physical assessments and in diagnosed patients receiving recommended support such as Cognitive Stimulation Therapy.
