Associate Professor in International Law at the #LyellCentre Dr Daniela Diz is continuing her globally significant work to protect ocean biodiversity across international borders. 🌍 Next week she will attend the UN Biodiversity Conference in Columbia, during which she'll support the identification of 300 new 'Ecologically or Biologically Significant Marine Areas' (EBSAs) as part of the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework. The framework sets out global targets to halt and reverse biodiversity loss on land and in marine environments. 🌊 Dani said: “These areas are all over the world, including the Northeast Atlantic, Northwest Atlantic, Southeast Atlantic, Indian Ocean, Pacific and Arctic. Some of them are important because they are very unique or unspoiled. Others might be important spawning grounds or habitats for certain species. The Fishing Lives survey seeks to explore the challenges currently facing fishers across the industry. This #ScottishClimateWeek, we're pleased to announce that Assistant Professor in #Geosciences at the #LyellCentre Dr Aaron Cahill has been named as a recipient of the UK Carbon Capture and Storage Research Centre (UKCCSRC) 2024 Flexible Funding awards. Each year #UKCCSRC funds #research projects that advance Carbon Capture and Storage - #CCS - solutions to tackle #ClimateChange. Aaron's project, "Development of a Quantative Wellbore Leakage Risk Assessment Tool for Screening Storage Projects (Q-WELLRATe), aims to develop a tool to simplify how CO2 leakage from legacy wells is evaluated. Two other researchers from Heriot-Watt University - Reinaldo Juan Lee Pereira and Farshad Jafarizadeh - have also been successful in securing funding for their respective projects: 'Large language models for high-throughput discovery of novel metal oxides for carbon capture' and 'Minimizing Environmental Impacts of CO2 Storage Projects: Time-Lapse Monitoring of Fault Reactivation for Safe Sequestration'. A new study has revealed concerns that seafloor fishing activities, such as bottom trawling, may accelerate the process that turns organic carbon to CO2. The research, co-led by Lyell Centre Associate Professor Dr Marija Sciberras, reviewed the findings of 71 independent studies to create a global database that improves understanding of the complex relationship between demersal fishing and seabed carbon. Findings of the research, which was funded by the Children's Investment Fund Foundation (CIFF), will be of particular interest to #ClimateChange scientists, policymakers and the #fisheries sector, and may inform new regulations aimed at minimising the adverse effects of fishing on marine environments. 🌎 A team of international scientists have joined together to gain a better understanding of the role marine organisms play in storing carbon in the ocean. On a recent 37-day expedition to the North Atlantic, researchers, including #LyellCentre expert in marine geology and biogeochemistry Professor Alex Poulton, utilised cutting-edge sensors, satellites and autonomous vehicles to analyse the biology and chemistry of the ocean. 🌊 During the expedition, the team encountered a massive 'bloom' of coccolithophores (roughly the size of Scotland!), which will be studied to help understand how it impacts CO2 absorption in the ocean. 🌡 Professor Poulton's research is funded by NERC: Natural Environment Research Council as part of the ambitious BIO-Carbon programme, led by the National Oceanography Centre and delivered in partnership with Heriot-Watt University and the University of Southampton. 🌎 Marine areas beyond national jurisdiction comprise around two-thirds of the ocean’s surface and 95% of its volume. The life contained within these areas are invaluable in terms of social, cultural, scientific and food-security benefits yet highly vulnerable to threats from pollution, overexploitation and climate change. 📜 Environmental Law expert at the #LyellCentre, Dr Daniela Diz, has co-led the production of a series of policy briefs intended to inform the practical implementation of the #BBNJ (Biodiversity Beyond National Jurisdiction) Agreement, a landmark UN agreement to take a 'one nation' approach to managing ocean areas beyond national jurisdiction. 🔎 The outputs, funded by the Scottish Council on Global Affairs and delivered in partnership with University of Edinburgh Law School, will be considered by international negotiators and national legislators across the Agreement's four pillars.
