Last Friday, we hosted the first Civil Justice Council meeting outside London 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁷󠁬󠁳󠁿🌟 The Council focus on the modernisation of the civil justice system to advise the Lord Chancellor at the Ministry of Justice UK, the judiciary and the Civil Procedure Rule Committee. We raised key concerns for our members in Wales regarding recruitment, training and court modernisation and look forward to continuing this close working relationship with the Council. Rhodri Williams KC, who sits on the Executive committee as the Welsh Interests member said: “As the Welsh Interests representative on the Civil Justice Council, I welcome the fact that the first ever meeting of the CJC outside London should take place in Cardiff, capital of the other part of legal jurisdiction that is England and Wales.” Commenting on this event, the Llywodraeth Cymru / Welsh Government's Counsel General Designate, Julie James MS said: “I’m pleased to see the Civil Justice Council has met in Wales for the first time and welcome its increasing focus on the distinct issues relating to justice here within the current, theoretically combined, jurisdiction of England and Wales.”

The Law Society Wales office welcomes the introduction of the Legislation (Procedure, Publication and Repeals) (Wales) Bill. In its current form, the Bill will help to simplify the operations of our members working in Wales, alongside those working in Welsh-medium. It will also support our members who work cross-border.     The Bill, by seeking to improve the accessibility of Welsh law, will also be of great benefit to improving public education on the rule of law and Welsh-specific areas of jurisdiction. We hope that the delivery of this Bill is accompanied by a strong information campaign which will ensure that our members are up to date with future changes and that the public are engaged fully in this process to ensure the success of the Bill.

Yesterday, The Law Society Wales office met with the new Counsel General Designate and Minister for Delivery, Julie James MS to discuss shared plans for the justice sector in Wales.    Chair for National Board for Wales, Mark Davies said: “After publishing our member-led paper Reimagining Justice in Wales 2030 last month, today was a perfect time to highlight the concerns and aspirations of our solicitors in Wales”    The Law Society’s Head of Wales, Jonathan Davies noted the “productive and positive nature of this first meeting”, saying: “Our members in Wales are rightly concerned about the future of the profession in terms of recruitment and I am pleased that we have started dialogue with the Welsh Government around introducing level 7 legal apprenticeships in Wales” “The Law Society Wales office are pleased to work with the new Counsel General who evidently echoes the same passion for the legal sector as we have.” 

🗣️“I felt that I had fallen behind all my university friends...They had all either qualified or were halfway through their training contracts” Completing her LPC from her home in North Wales during the pandemic, Joanna Kumwenda knew her journey to becoming a solicitor may not look typical. And, after a few path changes, she wants all aspiring solicitors to know that: 🗣️ "it doesn’t matter how long it takes, if you believe in yourself it will happen” Now, Joanna is fulfilling her dream of becoming a family solicitor at Gamlins Law in her home of North Wales. One of the biggest challenges facing small and medium-sized law firms in Wales is recruitment.
