At JO we are proud to be supporting Recycle Now & WRAP's #RecycleWeek ♻ Campaign - Rescue Me, shining a spotlight on the 1 billion items which still end up in the rubbish each year, which could and should be recycled and reused instead. While an amazing 88% of UK households regularly recycle, 87% of UK households attempt to recycle 1 or more items which are not accepted, and 57% miss one or more items which could be recycled at the kerbside. One of the best days in the JO calendar is our new cookbook co-creator day! This year to celebrate Jamie's new cookbook Simply Jamie, we invited a selection of brilliant content creators, from all over Europe, into Jamie Oliver HQ. It was a packed day full of workshops and sessions, where each of the 5 simple and delicious chapters of the book were brought to life! From cooking up and styling their own recipe pages, to decorating their own tartlets, Q&A sessions with Jamie and generally catching up on all things food, recipe inspiration and how to keep the nation(s) cooking - the office was buzzing with motivation and creativity from Jamie and our fantastic guests. 80,000 young people reached this year with Jamie Oliver's 10 Skills school programme. That is not a number we take lightly! 76% of young people who took part in our pilot program, cooked one or more of the recipes at home. That's education reaching real lives, families and households with healthy, nutritious and delicious food. It's why we do, what we do. We are thrilled that our Jamie Oliver 10 skills schools programme was featured in The Times this week. Thank you Rosamund Dean for a fantastic article discussing the importance of Food education in schools and how our new food education programme will be reaching 80,000 young people with this essential life skill this year. Not only that but The University of Leeds evaluation of our pilot programme found that kids who take part show a significant improvement in food literacy, driven by improvements in both knowledge and cooking confidence. These impacts were seen in both boys and girls showing Jamie’s universal appeal. 98% of the young people agreed that learning to cook was important and a huge 76% of kids who took part cooked one or more of the recipes at home. A real achievement considering the young people were only aged 12-14. We believe that learning to cook is just as important as English or Maths and despite more students than ever choosing to take Food at GCSE, it is a subject that is often undervalued and underfunded. We are calling for the government to put food at the heart of education.
