Concrete production is currently responsible for ~8% of global CO2 emissions, and with the equivalent of Paris being built every single week for the next 40 years, demand shows no signs of slowing down. To decarbonise this essential sector, urgent action is needed—and today, the UK Lower Carbon Concrete Group (LCCG) and #ConcreteZero have launched a ground-breaking scoping study that outlines the solutions to get us there. Long referred to as ‘hard-to-abate’, the solutions to decarbonise concrete are here, now. The report highlights: ⭕Immediate actions like reducing clinker content and increasing concrete efficiency to kickstart progress ⭕"Goldilocks pathways" that balance best practices with breakthrough technologies ⭕Promising solutions like near zero carbon Portland cement and clinker-free concretes that can help close the "carbon gap" in UK (and likely other countries’) concrete production by the 2030s. In the words of our Head of Industry Jen Carson: "The carbon gap is a stark reminder that good intentions alone won’t cut it—we need bold and coordinated action to drive the deep decarbonisation that’ll get the concrete sector to net zero by 2050." 📅 The time to act is now. Reflections from the incredible Freya Williams on this year's #ClimateWeekNYC
Sitting at the Opening Ceremony of #climateweeknyc this year was a moment of reflection for me - elation to be back after long years of absence owing to illness, joy at being surrounded by so many friends, clients and colleagues doing the work, optimism about the energy in the room - and a little deja vu. But also not. Because Climate Week this year was different. It was MASSIVE. The The Wall Street Journal reported 100k people in town, 900 events and a 200% increase in speaker applications to Climate Group over 2023 (thanks Lisa Manley for the stats) . I’ve read comments that we need to streamline the agenda, maybe split out climate week from UNGA. Some have complained speakers on the bigger stages were too guarded and risk averse in their comments vs prior years' bold commitments and goal announcements. Yes, sure. All valid. But a week out, I’m realizing my biggest takeaway is this: in this year of #ESG backlash, greenhushing and reported climate backtracking, this show of force really mattered. Showing up mattered. Proof of engagement mattered. CEOs (Andy Jassy), celebs (Matt Damon!), climate grand dames (Jane Goodall) and next gen leaders on stages mattered. The sheer volume of budgets, energy and time spent this week could have been deployed differently, sure, but to my mind, this bigger-than-ever Climate Week served as an assertive counterpoint to the ‘corporate climate action is stalling’ narrative. It sure didn’t look like it to me (I’ve been going to Climate Week for maybe 15 years so trust me when I tell you it was NOT always thus). So thank you to everyone who gave it their wisdom, time, energy, attention and presence. And thank you to everyone I managed to snap a selfie with, as well as the many I didn’t. You matter. You showing up mattered. I hope you’ve rested up, are getting rid of the Climate Week flu/Covid/shingles (ouch!) and are energized towards the enormous task ahead. Thanks so much for the warm welcome back 💚 I missed you all.
