The 2024 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine has been announced. Congratulations to Victor Ambros and Gary Ruvkun!
BREAKING NEWS The Nobel Assembly at the Karolinska Institutet has today decided to award the 2024 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine to Victor Ambros and Gary Ruvkun for the discovery of microRNA and its role in post-transcriptional gene regulation. This year’s Nobel Prize honours two scientists for their discovery of a fundamental principle governing how gene activity is regulated. The information stored within our chromosomes can be likened to an instruction manual for all cells in our body. Every cell contains the same chromosomes, so every cell contains exactly the same set of genes and exactly the same set of instructions. Yet, different cell types, such as muscle and nerve cells, have very distinct characteristics. How do these differences arise? The answer lies in gene regulation, which allows each cell to select only the relevant instructions. This ensures that only the correct set of genes is active in each cell type. This year’s medicine laureates Victor Ambros and Gary Ruvkun were interested in how different cell types develop. They discovered microRNA, a new class of tiny RNA molecules that play a crucial role in gene regulation. Their groundbreaking discovery revealed a completely new principle of gene regulation that turned out to be essential for multicellular organisms, including humans. It is now known that the human genome codes for over one thousand microRNAs. Their surprising discovery revealed an entirely new dimension to gene regulation. MicroRNAs are proving to be fundamentally important for how organisms develop and function.

Today is a very special day in Sweden: Cinnamon Roll Day. We started celebrations early with our ‘Notes on Nature’ discussion on Sunday, which featured delicious buns courtesy of the Embassy of Sweden London, UK and the Cafe at the Swedish Church. Attendees enjoyed a touch of Swedish ‘fika’ as they enjoyed the buns and got involved in a discussion led by environmental experts including film maker Joakim Odelberg whose mesmerising films feature in several forthcoming concerts. Join us for more debate (and more buns) at future ‘Notes on Nature’ events, and don’t miss our FREE ‘Music of Today’ concert this Sunday - all part of our Nordic Soundscapes series Find out more: https://lnkd.in/emfBxM3u All pics: Marc Gascoigne

Swedish innovation is leading the way to greener shipping. Sweden is world-leading when it comes to making shipping more energy-efficient, which is a crucial step to reduce global emissions. By investing in research and innovation, Sweden is paving the way for sustainable transport solutions. One example is Candela, a company based in Sweden that has developed the world’s first hydrofoil passenger ferry, with support from government grants. This technology allows the boat to hover just above the surface of the water, thus reducing energy consumption by 80 per cent. The ferry will be put into service in Stockholm in the near future. #WorldMaritimeDay

We are very excited to welcome none other than Ingegerd Råman, one of Sweden's most celebrated designers, to our panel discussion tomorrow at the Garden Museum in London. ⏰ 17 Sept 15:00—16:00 📍 The Garden Museum Together with the Swedish furniture company Verk , Råman has designed upholstery fully sourced from Swedish wool, created to be both sustainable and durable. 🌱 Even though conventional furniture fabrics have a significant impact on the environment, with half or more of Swedish and British wool being thrown away, sustainable upholstery has yet to receive the same level of attention as that given to sustainable fashion. 🐑 In our panel, Swedish design meets British initiatives in a conversation that combines artistic processes with the need for local small scale industries and a more sustainable furniture industry. 🛋️ 👉 Join us for a conversation on possibilities and share ideas and examples for around the globe on how we can create local initiatives together on the international design stage.
