Disabled people were nearly three times as likely to have no qualifications than abled people, as of 2021 in the UK alone. For Karen Youakim, no amount of statistics could clip her wings. A self-proclaimed “activist in training” and lawyer in the making, this 18-year-old hopes to be an example that disability is not an inability. Fortunately, her International Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma Programme provided the right support by equipping her with inclusive tools and resources to level the playing field for all hearing-impaired students. “If I had listened to the dozens of people telling me I couldn’t work harder, pursue specific goals or achieve achievements, I wouldn’t be where I am,” she says. Meet Chia Yi Tay, a speech-language therapist whose unique journey has made a major impact on dementia care. Originally aspiring to be a doctor, Tay's passion shifted towards a more relational approach to healthcare, leading her to pursue speech-language therapy instead of medicine.   Now based in Malaysia, Tay specialises in dementia care. She uses her Master’s in Dementia Studies from Bangor University 🎓to address the pressing needs of patients and their families.   Her work spans acute care, palliative wards, and dementia-specific services, ensuring comprehensive support for those affected. Beyond her hospital duties, Tay is a driving force in advocating for policy changes and building expertise in dementia care within Malaysia.   “It’s not enough that I am the one making noise on social media wherever I think that I need better dementia care,” she says. "I’m building the dementia expert group in Malaysia right now because I want them to be consulted when people want to know more about the topic."   ✨Intrigued? Changing degrees is never easy. For Adristi Maulida Fauzi, it meant facing the reality of potentially losing two years' worth of time, effort, and money. Yet, her decision to pivot was driven by a deeper conviction.   Initially drawn to Russia for its science programmes, Fauzi faced big hurdles — learning a new language and adapting to a new education system. By her second year, she realised that her path in business informatics didn’t match her passions.   Despite family and social pressures to continue, Fauzi chose to switch to a programme in International Politics, Law, and Economics at the University of Milan, a choice she describes as “the best decision” she’s ever made.   Today, Fauzi thrives in a diverse academic environment enriched by many experiences. According to Common Sense Media, teen social media use has surged, with an average of 7 hours and 22 minutes on screens daily, including 2 hours and 22 minutes dedicated to social platforms. ⏱️📊 US Surgeon General Vivek Murthy highlights a link between frequent social media use and mental health issues in adolescents, impacting emotional regulation and behaviour. 🚨Despite platform efforts to improve safety, such as TikTok’s “Family Pairing” feature and Instagram’s “Take a Break” reminders, concerns about teen mental health remain.
