Are we truly at the peak of obesity, or are we just beginning to rethink how we address one of the most pressing health challenges of our time? With Ozempic and other GLP-1 drugs in the spotlight, the conversation about treatment strategies and medical care has never been more pressing—or more complex. This isn’t just about weight loss. It’s about the future of obesity care in a world where medicine and pharmaceuticals increasingly shape how we manage chronic conditions. How can we balance short-term solutions with long-term health outcomes? And what does this mean for healthcare professionals, strategists, and policymakers? Join us for an online event where we explore the cultural and medical impacts of these so-called "miracle" drugs and the evolving narrative of obesity treatment. https://lnkd.in/gfXy4UKb

In 2024, the Global Obesity Conservatory recorded 1 billion people living with obesity worldwide. Over the last three years, spending on obesity has increased more than sevenfold. Yet, despite the growing resources and attention, addressing obesity holistically remains a significant challenge. Join our online event on Wednesday, 16 October, from 3–4 PM BST / 10–11 AM EST, as we discuss how policymakers, the pharmaceutical sector, and the healthcare industry can tackle these issues. The debate on the value of LLMs often overlooks an important question: what, in reality, are they? This months Frame explores this question through the lens of the work of philosopher Graham Harman argues that scientists and humanists—who are often at odds with one another—both get LLMs wrong, but for different reasons. By rejecting both these analyses as reductive, we see what an LLM truly is, and in doing so, open up a more productive, meaningful relationship with the technology. https://lnkd.in/ezVxQnKg #artificalintelligence #LLMs

Ozempic has fast become a clinical and cultural phenomenon. Viral memes of “Ozempic face” along with TikTok videos offering “Ozempic makeup looks” have placed terms like semaglutide and Wegovy at the centre of public conversation. Initially developed to treat type 2 diabetes (T2D), the class of drugs defined as “GLP-1 agonists” are now more commonly known as a viable means of weight loss. As social scientists, we are interested in examining how GLP-1 drugs are themselves having an agonistic effect on the discourses of health, generating novel questions at the intersections between industries and medical specialities. Our online event aims to examine the transformation of GLP-1 agonists from therapeutic agents into cultural artefacts. We have assembled an exciting panel of experts spanning healthcare policy, history of medicine, and obesity medicine. We will be joined by Courtney Younglove, M.D., FOMA, FACOG, DABOM, Jessica Hamel-Akré, Ph.D., and Patrick Swain. We will also be joined by the International Longevity Centre - UK for this event who have led pioneering initiatives to measure and promote healthy ageing and prevention both in the UK and globally. Our discussion will be guided by three questions: - What do GLP-1 drugs reveal about medical, historical, and cultural perceptions of obesity? - What role can GLP-1 drugs play in the fight against “globesity”? - How can pharmaceutical companies and policy makers skilfully navigate polarised public discourses while remaining focused on the needs of patients? Join us on Wednesday, 16 October at 3–4pm BST / 10–11am EST Link in the comments ⬇️ #weightlossdrugs #ozempic #glp1drugs #healthTalk #healthcare #health #medicine #medtech
