🌱 Last week, I had the pleasure of hosting an event with the Technology Sustainability team at JP Morgan, where we welcomed Anne Currie, co-author of Building Green Software. We explored what it really means to practice green software, including how companies can start implementing sustainable tech practices in practical, gradual steps. Anne shared some eye-opening insights on why it’s crucial to understand and measure Scope 1, 2, and 3 emissions—and how simple actions like cutting out 'zombie' processes and rightsizing workloads can make a big difference before diving into things like switching to Rust or aiming for 24/7 carbon-free electricity. One key takeaway was the need of real mindset shift when it comes to technology practices. Sustainability in tech isn’t just for the big players—any organisation, no matter its size needs to start thinking differently about their tech emissions and take action today. The lunchtime mini conference format was really excellent: 25 min talk from me (the external expert) followed by 10 mins from Amit Kumar on their sustainability work & what they were up to followed by a 15 min panel of me plus 2 internal experts followed by 10 min Q&A from the audience Followed by some tea drinking and cake eating hallway track Very densely packed with content. Mixture of IRL and remote audience. Really excellent mini conference. I obv thought of Matthew Skelton and Victoria Morgan-Smith and your work on the power of internal conferences
