About us
We imagine a world where all lesbian, gay, bi, trans, queer, questioning and ace (LGBTQ+) people are free to be themselves. Stonewall was founded in 1989 by a small group of people who wanted to break down barriers to equality. Stonewall continues to campaign and lobby government to change laws to ensure everyone, everywhere, is free to be themselves. Stonewall works in partnership with a growing network of more than 700 organisations to help create real change for the better. It campaigns to eliminate homophobia, biphobia and transphobia in communities, and empowers LGBT people and their allies to be role models wherever they live, work, shop, socialise or pray. 🌈 This #LGBTHistoryMonth, we're looking back at the pivotal moments in LGBTQ+ history that we're proud to have been a part of. ...Starting with the repeal of Section 28 in Scotland, England and Wales. Section 28 banned the ‘promotion of homosexuality’ by schools and councils across Britain. Stonewall was founded in response to this legislation. We’ve come so far, but there’s still work to do - like banning harmful conversion practices and ensuring all LGBTQ+ people are free and safe to be themselves. "One of the US President’s first actions upon taking office was to deny the existence of trans, non-binary and intersex people [...] this has alarming historical parallels to some of humanity’s worst moments." 🚨 As the incoming US administration issued a series of Executive Orders, #LGBTQ+ people around the world have watched with alarm.
