On Tuesday (8 October), Partners Mark Ashby and Stuart Syddell attended the Movers & Shakers Property Networking Forum's 10th Build to Rent Forum in London. Bringing together leaders, influencers, and change-makers in the UK property industry, the event explored the role rented living could play in the government's ambitious plan to build 1.5 million homes in the next 5 years. "Whilst it was clear from all those who spoke and attended the day that the challenges in the sector remain, the optimism at this year’s forum was evident. The new government’s housing targets have given renewed hope for the future of the sector. It was also great to connect with clients and consultants who attended the day," said Stuart Syddell.

Yesterday, some of our people attended a great event hosted by Real Estate Balance and Sodexo 🙌 In honour of Black History Month, the organisations set out to celebrate the contributions of Black professionals to UK real estate and also discuss topics related to inclusion and representation. Marketing Executive, Beatrice Fatusin shared her thoughts on the event: “It was wonderful to witness the success of diverse individuals in the real estate industry and to have the opportunity to learn from their experiences. The panel discussion was incredibly enriching with key discussions on being an effective ally when it comes to race, underrepresentation of black individuals within the industry (particularly at senior levels) and how we can all work together to amplify Black voices and support our colleagues in professional spaces.” We would like to thank Real Estate Balance for their positive impact on the real estate industry and their dedication to promoting meaningful change in the area of racial equality 👏 #togetherwedeliver #blackhistorymonth #equality #inclusion #reclaimingnarratives

Back from a couple of days in the Peak District on one of my projects checking out the helicopter lifting for stone dams as part of a Peatland restoration project, and a day of volunteering planting sphagnum. Read on to find out more about the importance of Peatlands and what we are doing to help with their restoration…… Peatlands are among the most valuable ecosystems on Earth, providing a range of environmental benefits. The National Trust, with the support of Stace providing cost management and principal designer services, is undertaking a significant Peatland Restoration Project in the High Peaks of the Peak District. This initiative aims to restore 334 hectares of peatland, yielding numerous ecological and environmental advantages. Peat is a soil composed of partially decomposed plant matter that has generated over thousands of years due to wetter conditions. It is often found on moors like in the High Peaks and is often covered by a blanket of flora contributing to it’s build up of around a millimetre of peat per annum, in some areas reaching depths of up to 10m. Rising atmospheric pollution levels driven particularly by the industrial movements of the neighbouring cities of Manchester and Sheffield, changed the acidity levels in the soil meaning that the protective layer of flora over the peat has diminished. This leaves large areas of bare peat which decays rapidly releasing carbon into the atmosphere contributing to climate change. This project is expected to save over 5,000 tons of carbon annually and store many more in layers of peat for years to come. One of the primary goals of the project is to adapt the hydrology of the landscape to retain moisture. Helicopters are used to place stones creating dams to block eroded gulley systems and retain water within the landscape. Peatland restoration also plays a vital role in reducing the risk of mountain fires. The management of brash and the maintenance of wetter peatlands decrease the likelihood of ignition protecting the local flora and fauna; and the safety and enjoyment of the many hikers using the trails which form part of the Pennine Way. As rainwater drains through the layers of peat, it undergoes natural filtration, resulting in improved water quality. This process benefits both the local ecosystem and the human populations that rely on these water sources. Notably, Buxton Water’s bottling plant is just 8 miles south. Restored peatlands act as natural sponges, retaining rainwater during periods of heavy rainfall. This retention reduces the risk of flooding in lower valley areas, protecting homes, infrastructure, and agricultural lands from water damage. The restoration process includes planting sphagnum moss across the peat surface. Sphagnum is a key species in peatland ecosystems due to it's ability to form new layers of peat and restoring carbon stocks. 800,000+ sphagnum plants will planted as part of this project.
