St Ethelburga’s is a maker of peacemakers. We build community resilience for times of ecological and social emergency.
About us
Bridging divides, loving Earth St Ethelburga’s work sits at the intersection of climate and peace. We believe there can be no peace on Earth unless we also realise peace with Earth. We offer events, training, leadership programmes and multimedia content which equip and inspire people to become peacemakers in their own contexts. Our project areas include spiritual ecology, community reconciliation, refugee inclusion, radical resilience, viewpoint diversity. Set in a medieval church in the heart of the City of London, St Ethelburga’s is a unique place to work. Destroyed by an IRA bomb in 1993, rebuilt as a centre for reconciliation and peace in 2003, St Ethelburga’s is a symbol of renewal in times of crisis.

“The God of the Christians is a scandal. He's born an outcast, he dies an outlaw. He is this extraordinary countercultural force, the shock of which we're still dealing with 2000 years later. The extraordinary. How on earth could I have gone to church for 17 years and not received the memo? How could that possibly have happened? I think partially it happened because I went to a wonderful church, Upton Vale Baptist Church in Torquay. But the centre of power in that church, certainly as a young guy, seemed to be the pulpit, not the altar. And it was the charisma of the teachers and the sermons where you were to draw all your spiritual residue for the week. Someone once said to me, how do you see Christ? I said, he's a figure out of the corner of my eye, moving between trees. I can't see him clearly, but that is enough for this lifetime.” - Martin Shaw, Seeking God in Wild Places Image: The Trinity, c. 1460. Laurent Girardin
