Clean power by 2030? We hear from Chris Stark in his first public engagement since becoming Chair of the UK government's Mission Control. This week was the annual Business of Leading the Energy Transition (BLET) conference. SSE plc’s CEO, Alistair Phillips-Davies, joined other leaders from Government, private sectors and a range of industries to discuss how the UK can deliver the energy transition and government’s wider economic growth ambitions. We caught up with Chris Stark, Head of ‘Mission Control’ for Clean Power 2030, Department for Energy Security and Net Zero, to discuss why BLET is important to accelerating progress and maintain the UK’s leadership ahead of COP29 Azerbaijan… BLET is in partnership with Accenture UK & Ireland, Barclays, Cambridge Institute for Sustainability Leadership (CISL), Corporate Leaders Groups, Hitachi Energy and NatWest Group #BusinessofLeadingtheEnergyTransition #BLET #BLET24 #LeadingTheTransition #MissionControl #NetZero #EnergySecurity #CleanPower2030

“There is a lot more to do. We need to increase the pace.” It was good to see new renewable energy projects being successful in the latest UK Government’s six allocation round (AR6) of the Contracts for Difference (CfD) scheme, including SSE Renewables’ 135.5MW Cloiche onshore wind farm. However, we need to pick up the pace to deliver the Government’s 2030 clean power mission, particularly on offshore wind and urgent planning reform to speed up network infrastructure. Thank you to Will Bain and Henry Jones for the opportunity to discuss all this and more on the BBC’s Today programme this morning. Let me know what you think.

We're pleased to announce that Cloiche Wind Farm has been successful in the UK’s sixth Contract for Difference (CfD) Allocation Round and is set to be awarded a 15-year contract for low carbon power for 130.5MW of new onshore wind generation. Cloiche will receive the guaranteed strike price of £50.90/MWh, based on 2012 prices but annually indexed since then for CPI inflation, for the contracted low carbon electricity it will generate for a 15-year period from the 2027/28 delivery year. Located in the Scottish Highlands, Cloiche, which was granted consent in November 2023, is in late-stage development and will be targeting final investment decision in 2025. Is CCUS part of the pathway to net zero? Carbon capture utilisation and storage (CCUS) still is not as supported as other low-carbon technologies, but why? Ruth Herbert MPhys FEI, CEO of the Carbon Capture and Storage Association, explains why flexible power technologies like CCUS are an integral to our net zero transition. We are thrilled to announce that the Shetland Islands have been connected to the GB electricity grid for the first time, thanks to the completion of the Viking Wind Farm by SSE Renewables and a 260km subsea transmission link by SSEN Transmission ! The Viking Wind Farm, with its 103 Vestas turbines, is set to become the UK’s most productive onshore wind farm, generating enough clean energy to power nearly 500,000 homes annually. This marks a significant milestone in the UK’s mission to deliver clean power by 2030. These projects represent over £1 billion of investment as part of our £20.5 billion commitment to clean energy infrastructure by 2027. Beyond the clean energy, the projects have supported 650 jobs and contributed £125 million to the local Shetland economy during peak construction. The Viking Community Fund will provide over £70 million in support for local initiatives throughout the lifetime of the wind farm. This achievement underscores our commitment to delivering clean energy and driving sustainable economic growth. A huge thank you to everyone involved in making this a reality! The Race to Accelerate Renewables in the Global South To achieve global net zero targets, we must act together. The Global South holds immense potential for renewable energy development, essential for a sustainable future no longer dependent on fossil fuels for economic prosperity. But how do we unlock this potential and learn from success? This webinar explores recent research from the University of Oxford investigating the critical challenges, insights and opportunities for both large developers and local champions to drive this transition. Building on this, we will reveal new data identifying renewables champions at the country level, and the barriers and drivers of high capacity over time. Hear from our expert panel including SSE plc's Sam Peacock, Jacqueline L. from Sustainable Energy for All (SEforALL), Julian Mylchreest from Bank of America, Gauri Singh from International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA), with a presentation and moderated by Cameron Hepburn from Smith School of Enterprise and the Environment - University of Oxford. 📆 26 September, 14:30-15:30 BST UK / 9:30 – 10:30 EST New York 🖋 Register via the link in the comments below 🔗 ⬇ (photo credits: SSE plc, TEDx, Wikimedia Commons, Adobe Stock) #GlobalSouth #RenewableEnergy #AcceleratingRenewables

⚡ "Overhead lineworking is a timeless, uniquely skilled and often lonely job...an invisible arm of the emergency services...frontline staff who in the face of extreme weather and natural disasters must restore power to a society now unable to function without it." 📰 The Times' Melanie Reid summing up the critical role our teams have. Melanie's been along to meet some SSEN apprentices who're in training to keep the lights on in the years to come. We really appreciated being able to welcome her to our Perth Training Centre to meet the team including 17 year-old Tyler (pictured), and to demonstrate how thorough and safety-conscious our training programme is. ⬇ You can read the full article by clicking the link in the comments below.

Our new energy-from-waste facility in Slough has officially entered commercial operations ahead of schedule. The 55MW Slough Multifuel plant – which was developed in partnership with Copenhagen Infrastructure Partners and delivered by EPC contractor Hitachi Zosen Inova – will divert thousands of tonnes of waste away from landfill and convert it into a valuable source of energy. Our Managing Director, Finlay McCutcheon, said: “The successful delivery of the project is testament to the partnership between SSE and CIP, which spans multiple projects and continues to create genuine value. "It also highlights our ability to deliver large capital projects, with this particular project being a highly complex one due to the constrained nature of the site. Working with HZI, we have navigated that challenge and can take real pride in doing so safely.”

We’ve opened our first Irish public EV charging hub in Mullingar! 🚗🔌 Peter Burke, the Minister for Department of Enterprise, Trade and Employment, officially opened our first ultra-rapid electric vehicle (EV) charging hub in Ireland. The launch of the 10-bay facility located just off the M4 at Lough Sheever Corporate Park in Mullingar, Co. Westmeath, is part of our plans to build 300 ultra-rapid EV charging hubs powered by traceable, renewable energy in the Ireland and the UK in the next five years with several sites already open and more under construction. Each ultra-rapid bay has charging capabilities of up to 150 kilowatts (kW), sufficient to deliver 12.5 kms of range per minute of charging! 🗣️ Peter Burke, the Minister for Enterprise, Trade and Employment, said: “To reduce transport emissions and meet our climate targets, the Government is committed to promoting and incentivising the use of EVs. Private investment like this is essential to grow the network with the pace and scale required to meet Ireland’s ambitious targets. I am delighted SSE has selected Mullingar as the location of their first EV charging Hub in Ireland. I have no doubt that businesses in the region with eHGVs, as well as members of the public, will benefit from this innovative site.”
