🌟 August is Spinal Muscular Atrophy (#SMA) awareness month! 🌟 SMA is a progressive neurodegenerative condition that impacts the motor nerve cells in the spinal cord and affects the muscles that are used for breathing, eating, and walking. 🚶 SMA awareness month raises awareness of SMA and offers a variety of ways to become involved! Cure SMA has compiled a list of ideas for participating which include: 📱 Use your social media! Share your experiences and connection to the SMA community – Tag Cure SMA and use #SMAawarenessmonth in your posts. 🎧 Listen for the PSAs all month! Cure SMA will be running PSAs all month on iHeart Radio in 24 states. There is also a theme song for the month – “Lift Me Up” by Lachi, James Ian, featuring Gaelynn Lea. 🕯️ Participate in a candle lighting! Light a candle to remember those who have passed away from SMA. This year, the annual candle lighting will take place on the second Saturday of August at sunset. 💖 Attend an awareness lighting! There will be awareness lightings at popular landmarks like buildings, bridges, and entertainment venues.
