Better Future, Quicker

About us

We transmit, distribute and connect electricity to and from 3.5 million homes and businesses over our network, 24 hours a day, every day of the year. We operate in three of the UK's largest cities (Liverpool, Glasgow & Edinburgh) accounting for 1.6m (46%) of our customers, as well as three significant rural areas (North Wales, Scottish Borders and Dumfries & Galloway). We take electricity generated from power stations and renewable energy sources, reduce it to the low voltage needed for homes and transport it through our vast electricity network. We also provide customers with new or upgraded connections to our network. We are a substantial employer with a distribution workforce of 2,600 internal employees made up of field staff, engineers, technical specialists, customer service and support staff based at 17 locations in the South of Scotland and 17 locations in England and Wales. We utilise around 2,500 contractors across these areas. Our highly trained and specialist staff work 24/7 to maintain the performance and safe condition of our electricity network, respond to customer enquiries and restore the supply as quickly as possible when a fault occurs on the network. In the UK, we are a leading Distribution Network Operator (DNO) in distributing renewable energy, having connected around 7GW of renewable generation to our networks with more connected on a daily basis.

🎉We have been shortlisted for two Planet Mark Awards! 🌳Our nomination for Best Company (overall), acknowledges the critical role we have in helping the UK meet its ambitious climate change targets, while ensuring our activities are sustainable. We delivered on our climate, nature and resource targets through science-based measurement, which helped make 2023/24 our lowest recorded carbon footprint yet - a reduction of 51% in the last decade! 🌍As the official community partner for the Glasgow Warriors men’s and women’s rugby teams, we are thrilled to be nominated for the Community Engagement award. This partnership not only champions diversity and inclusion in STEM and sport, it reaches schools, families, and the most vulnerable energy customers. #SPEnergyNetworks #GlasgowWarriors #ThePlanetMark #sustainability #community

Join us at this year’s Energy Innovation Summit, where we’ll be joined by Sia Partners and University of Glasgow, to showcase a demonstration of our exciting Predict4Resilience (P4R) project. 🎉 In a UK first, P4R is trialling AI technology to predict potential faults on the electricity network caused by severe weather. This groundbreaking project has the potential to revolutionise the industry, ensuring that we can have equipment and engineers ready to tackle problems before they even happen! 👷 We’re excited to work with Sia Partners and University of Glasgow on this innovative project. Sia Partners are providing the technical capabilities to build the software, its supporting infrastructure, and their business expertise to ensure this technology has the potential to be rolled out across all network operators. University of Glasgow bring world-leading expertise in forecasting and data analytics that underpin the P4P fault forecasting capability. ⚡ Come along on the 29th and 30th of October to see this technology in action and chat with our team about this exciting development. 👏

Food Train's Stewartry branch is going green thanks to our Net Zero Fund! The charity's Stewartry branch has recently purchased two new EVs and installed an onsite charging point with the support of a £100,000 funding boost. The new electric fleet will provide the team with access to reliable, sustainable transport and lower emissions, allowing Food Train to continue making 100s of weekly grocery deliveries to older people across Dumfries without racking up their carbon footprint. To celebrate, we teamed up with our Official Community Partner Glasgow Warriors to help out Food Train's volunteer drivers on their morning delivery shift. This year we launched our first ever biodiversity report 🙌 🌺 Sadly, almost half of Britain’s biodiversity has disappeared since the 1970’s and we want to change that. Our biodiversity report focuses on how we can increase places for wildlife and insects to grow🌾 A project within our biodiversity report is Bickley Boost for Bees. This project will create a further 6,200 square meters of wildflower meadowland. This is around four times the size of a hockey rink ❄️ These extra meadows will provide a place for bugs and insects to call home as well as restoring natural beauty to the Bickley Hall Farm HQ. 🌍 On the journey to reaching Net Zero, we all need to reduce our reliance on fossil fuels and use more sustainable energy to power our lives. The electricity transmission network is critical to getting clean, green energy from where it’s generated to where it’s needed most – powering our homes, businesses, schools, hospitals and transportation. ⏰ In December we will publish our next Transmission Business Plan (RIIO-T3), outlining our investment in the transmission network from 2026 – 2031. As we finish developing our plan, it’s important for us to understand the needs of our communities and stakeholders. Please Register as a Stakeholder and join us on the journey of developing our next Transmission Business Plan 👉 https://ow.ly/zj8Y50TIREj Together, we can build a more secure and resilient electricity network for the future. #SPEnergyNetworks #NetZero

Last week, our executives joined key industry leaders from Scotland and beyond at the Future Energy Skills Summit to discuss one of the most critical challenges in our journey to Net Zero: ensuring we have the right people with the right skills. This summit was a unique opportunity to collaborate, share insights, and align our efforts to maximize impact. Scott Mathieson, SPEN Director of Network Planning & Regulation, and Jennifer Davies, SPEN Workforce Renewal Manger, took part in the panel sessions and shared their perspective. A comprehensive discussion paper has just been published, framing the challenge and providing key recommendations for collaboration. This research was funded through the TIC LCPE Partnership. 🌟Strategic Innovation Fund🌟 We've secured nearly £1m of funding from Ofgem’s Strategic Innovation Fund, managed in partnership with Innovate UK, to move two projects, Equiflex and LVOE, into their next stage. The two projects look to address key challenges facing the electricity network and its customers as the UK moves to electrification and a sustainable future; removing barriers to flexibility services and helping to balance voltage differences on the network to enable the uptake of low carbon technologies such as electric vehicles and heat pumps. On #WorldAnimalDay we had to share this great capture showing an EGL4 marine survey vessel at work near Fife, with a pod of dolphins playing in the foreground 🐬 Eastern Green Link 4 (EGL4) is a 2 GW High Voltage Direct Current (HVDC) link, part of the Accelerated Strategic Transmission Investment (ASTI) framework introduced by Ofgem in 2022. Developed in partnership between SP Transmission and National Grid Electricity Transmission (NGET), EGL4 is an electrical link that will connect Fife, to Lincolnshire, England and will play a key role in the fight against climate change and the UK’s transition to Net Zero. 🌍 Marine surveys are conducted from an early stage of offshore projects, as they are essential to robustly plan our cable routes and identify the best ways to protect marine life. These surveys assess seabed conditions, identify obstacles, help evaluate environmental impacts, and provide necessary information to support our design and assessments as well as the regulatory and consenting process.
