🚨 OUT TODAY: 91% of Brits are open to partial replacement of traditional fireworks with ‘alternative’ displays – like lasers, drones, or silent/quiet fireworks Only 15% are satisfied with the status quo, SMF’s polling of a nationally representative sample of 1,000 British adults revealed. Countries around the world have explored alternatives and tougher regulations. Scotland has also passed legislation in the last couple of years to tighten restrictions on when and where fireworks can be used. This is also an opportunity to expand the offer of alternatives to traditional fireworks. Over 60% say they’d enjoy alternatives just as much, and this figure rises to 66% among those that have attended displays with alternative displays. The SMF set out a two-pronged strategy for government to facilitate greater adoption of alternative firework display styles – tougher regulation on use of traditional displays, while empowering local councils to try out newer types of displays. OUT TODAY: Britons get 5G only 10% of the time The UK has ranked bottom of 15 developing and advanced international markets on both 5G availability and download speeds, as shown in a new ranking system. At the core of the UK’s poor mobile connectivity is a lack of investment in next generation technologies and telecommunications infrastructure. Barriers to investment include complex planning laws, uncertainty over consumer demand, and the structure of the market. This briefing comes ahead of a more detailed policy report due for publication later in the year. 🚨 OUT NOW: UK urged to lead cross-border war on £420 billion “fraudemic” sweeping the globe SMF report estimates 10 million Brits fell victim to fraud between 2021-23, with £168bn across 15 countries falling into the hands of criminals. Drawing on a survey of 28k adults across 15 countries (first-of-its-kind), the report finds over a fifth (21%) of adults fell victim to fraud over the period of 2021-23. That's about 228 million people, with a total direct cost of £168bn (rising to over £420bn, including wider socioeconomic costs). Expert interviews highlighted the inadequacy of the counter-fraud response in the UK and abroad. The cross-border nature of fraud means the problem can’t effectively be tackled without close collaboration between governments. Read the report: https://lnkd.in/emNvB47N
