We recently hosted a group of talented young minds from The Hidden Genius Project (THGP) at Smiths Detection Inc., Edgewood as a part of our STEM initiative. The first cohort of THGP, 19 students from Baltimore accompanied by their chaperones, joined us for Field Trip Friday. The newly established Baltimore Chapter, with the support of Smiths Detection, aims to empower Black male high school students through their Intensive Immersion Programme—a free, 15-month training initiative offering over 800 hours of mentorship and hands-on experience in coding and entrepreneurship. During their visit, students engaged in activities centered around our products and technology, participated in critical thinking projects, and toured our manufacturing facilities. We look forward to continuing our partnership with THGP and eagerly anticipate our next interaction with these inspiring young individuals. Our team of experts played an active role in the interview process for this pioneering group. A big thank you to all the organizers who made this day memorable for these young minds!

Laredo Sector Border Patrol recently announced the deployment of “Multi-Energy Portal (MEP)” at their I-35 checkpoint. The implementation of a MEP is a significant step in the U.S. Customs and Border Protection’s layered enforcement strategy to curb illegal activities, including narcotics smuggling, at the borders.   This MPE, a new non-intrusive commercial vehicle screening technology, is an advanced X-ray machine designed to enhance inspections of commercial vehicles and ensure the safety of the traveling public while facilitating and expediting trade at the I-35 checkpoint. The MEP can safely and swiftly examine more than 150 containers per hour in a typical flow of traffic at the checkpoint.   More such X-ray machines have been implemented at local ports of entry in the USA to help in the prevention of narcotics entering the country. https://lnkd.in/dzp5eY_y

We’re delighted to see our colleague, Dr. Helen Bieker, feature as the Deutsche Physikalische Gesellschaft e. V. (DPG)'s "Physicist of the Week", an initiative to recognise women working in the field of physics in Germany or German women working in physics abroad.   Helen joined us in 2021 and is currently working as a Scientist at the Research and Development in Norderstedt, north of Hamburg. Helen is responsible for validating the functioning of the machines and improving their performance. Her expertise in X-ray techniques, Python programming, and image processing plays a major role in the organisation's development.   Join us in congratulating Dr. Helen Bieker.

Smiths Detection announces the successful integration and testing of SeeTrue AI's Prohibited Items Detection Software (APIDS ready) engine with our CT security checkpoint systems 🤝 This collaboration was undertaken as part of the Ada Initiative, our official process of working with new suppliers to ensure their solutions work seamlessly with the Smiths Detection devices whilst maintaining high performance standards. The SeeTrue software will be implemented with the HI-SCAN 6040 CTiX to enhance our devices’ screening capabilities. PRODUCT UPDATE: IONSCAN 600   The highly sensitive trace detector, IONSCAN 600, is small and light in weight making it easily portable. 𝐄𝐦𝐩𝐨𝐰𝐞𝐫𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐖𝐨𝐦𝐞𝐧 𝐓𝐡𝐫𝐨𝐮𝐠𝐡 𝐌𝐞𝐧𝐨𝐩𝐚𝐮𝐬𝐞: 𝐀 𝐍𝐞𝐰 𝐈𝐧𝐢𝐭𝐢𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐯𝐞 Did you know that 45% of women feel uncomfortable discussing menopausal symptoms with their line manager? 🤐 And only 3% have taken time off work due to menopause-related symptoms without providing a reason. The struggle is real, with around 1 in 4 considering early retirement due to these symptoms. Research shows that women experiencing severe menopausal symptoms are 43% more likely to leave their jobs before retirement age. It's time for change! At Smiths Detection, we're committed to supporting our incredible female workforce. Last week saw the launch of Menopause Circles, a 𝐰𝐨𝐦𝐞𝐧@𝐰𝐨𝐫𝐤 initiative led by menopause coach Laura Shuckburgh from Marvellous Midlife. The first session covered:  - Navigating menopause in the workplace  - Healthy living through menopause  - Menopause and relationships  - Empowerment and menopause: Thriving beyond the change  and was attended by 98 women across 26 global sites!     With the Menopause Circles, we hope to break the silence about this biological transition some of our employees are going through (or about to), providing tools, peer-to-peer support, and a safe space to share experiences.
