Simpsons Malt is a family-owned, B Corp maltster supplying quality malt to the brewing, distilling and food industries.
About us
Simpsons Malt Limited was established by J.P. Simpson in Alnwick, Northumberland, back in 1862. It has remained a family-owned and run business throughout its history and has stayed truly independent in what is an ever-changing market place. Our customers predominantly use our malted products in the production of beer, whisky and food products and are based both in the UK and abroad. We have supplied malt to companies in more than 35 countries over the last 20 years. We prefer to source our raw materials from the UK, of which malting barley is the most common. We established our own merchanting company, McCreath Simpson in 1980, which became McCreath, Simpson & Prentice (MSP) in 1982. As a result, through MSP we are able to procure the majority of our raw material requirements each year.

Lower carbon barley = harvested ✅ Last month, Mellerstain Mill – a farm near Gordon in the Scottish Borders – harvested its malting barley crop, which had Yara UK low-carbon fertiliser applied to it as part of a pilot for the 2024 growing season 🌱 The result is a carbon footprint reduction in the crop of up to 20%, reinforcing our commitment to reducing the carbon footprint of the malting barley and distilling wheat supply chains 🌾 A few days after harvest, the barley was collected by one of our wagons - all of which use HVO fuel ⛽ - and transported to our Gladsmuir Grain Store in East Lothian, where it will spend time in storage before being moved to our Tweed Valley Maltings to be made into high-quality distilling malt 🚛 Read more about our partnership with Yara on page 28 of our Sustainability Report here 👉 https://buff.ly/3ZURAzG

For many years, we have been working alongside Robin Appel Ltd and St Austell Brewery on the procurement of Cornish grown Maris Otter and Laureate barley for use in their renowned beers such as Tribute and Proper Job 🍺 Earlier this year, Richard Simpson and Jamie Ramshaw joined Jonathan Arnold from Robin Appel Ltd and members of the St Austell Brewery team - including Brewing Director Georgina Young - down in Cornwall to visit growers ahead of harvest 🌾 This year's barley is now safely in storage and will be processed into malt at our Tivetshall Maltings over the coming months 🏭 https://lnkd.in/enQjPDuq

12MW electric boiler = delivered 🚛 We're delighted to share with you the latest milestone in the Energy Centre project at our Tweed Valley Maltings headquarters in Berwick-upon-Tweed following the delivery of the 12MW electric boiler ⚡ The electric boiler will use excess renewable electricity from North Sea wind farms and, in working alongside three 6MW biomass boilers, it will reduce carbon emissions generated during the energy-intensive kilning stage of the malting process by 25,000 tonnes per year. Due to how energy-intensive the kilning stage of the malting process is, and how big our Tweed Valley Maltings site is (production capacity of 260,000 tonnes per year), once operational the Energy Centre is set to reduce Scope 1 & 2 emissions at the site by up to 80% and company-wide by around 55%. This will also translate to a Scope 3 emissions reduction for the malting customers who receive malt produced at this site - around 90% of which is destined for the distilling industry 🥃 Read more 👉 https://buff.ly/3ABhPAl Vital Energi Utilities Limited AMP Clean Energy Scotch Whisky Association
Cheers to a more sustainable future for the Scotch Whisky Industry! 🌿⚡🥃 Exciting news from Simpsons Malt: The game-changing 12MW electric boiler has just arrived at their Berwick-upon-Tweed site after completing the 360-mile trip from Norway! Why is it such an exciting moment? • This boiler is set to help slash carbon emissions by a whopping 80% at the UK's largest malting site • It will work alongside three 6MW biomass boilers, reducing emissions by 25,000 tonnes annually • The site produces 260,000 tonnes of malt per year, with 90% going to distilleries This isn't just about Simpsons Malt… It’s a big step forwards for their customers in the Scotch whisky industry. By decarbonising their operations, they're helping their customers achieve their net-zero goals too. One of the things which makes this project truly special is that the boiler will use excess renewable electricity from North Sea wind farms, making the energy-intensive malting process greener than ever before. Here’s to our partners Simpsons Malt Limited and AMP Clean Energy on reaching an exciting milestone! 🥃 https://lnkd.in/er9x2gjc #netzero #foodanddrink #netzero #windpower #electricificationofheat
