  • "It’s no exaggeration to say that without the teams at the Royal Hallamshire and Jessop Wing we wouldn’t be here today. The treatment and level of care I received in Sheffield was amazing." In August 2005, Louise Houghton, 51, had a life-saving operation to remove a tumour in her brain which had doubled in size whilst she was pregnant. 19 years later - and to mark the anniversary of the 15-hour procedure which saved both her and her son's life - she's taken to social media to praise the hospital team: “19 years ago today, the NHS (Tom Carroll and the Skull Base Group at Sheffield Hallamshire Hospital) saved my life. Just 4 days earlier the team at the Jessop Wing had saved this little one's life too. We will be forever grateful.” #AcousticNeuroma #NHS Louise first learned she had developed an acoustic neuroma, a non-cancerous growth which connects the inner ear with the brain, when she was 24 weeks pregnant. At 27 weeks, all was fine with the baby, but an MRI scan showed that the tumour had doubled in size in less than seven weeks. "I was 32 and heavily pregnant. The scan showed my tumour had compacted against my brain stem and was full of cysts, meaning any operation would be even more complicated. I was given a course of steroids to give my son a much better chance of survival.” On the 18th August 2005, Louise’s son, Rhufon, was delivered by c-section, nine weeks early, and weighing just 4lb 10ozs. Four days later a team of surgeons led by Consultant Neurosurgeon Thomas Carroll and Consultant Ear, Nose and Throat surgeon Mark Yardley at the Royal Hallamshire Hospital, removed the tumour in a complex operation that involved removing the tumour from the corner of her brain stem. • We're really pleased to be offering parents-to-be the chance to take part in an exciting new study testing whether a new digital imaging device is better at detecting cataracts in babies than the current test that all babies have at birth. The study, known as DiVO, will make use of a handheld device, which is easy for maternity staff to use. The digital images taken - which use infrared light - can also be shared with other experts for a second opinion, even if they are miles away. Each baby taking part in the study will have both the normal ophthalmoscopy test and imaging with the new device, known as Neocam. The two methods will then be compared to see if either is more accurate. Congenital cataracts are rare, with only around 1 in 3,000 babies are affected, but improved cataract detection, resulting in earlier surgery, could reduce the risk of lifelong visual impairment in babies born with cataracts. The UK-wide study is being funded by the NIHR (National Institute for Health and Care Research) and involves 25 hospitals, including the Jessop Wing Maternity Unit. The study is open to those who are due to give birth at the Jessop Wing any time in the next year. Read more: https://lnkd.in/dPegkkGT

  • Our world-leading diabetes experts have launched a groundbreaking trial aiming to reverse the lifetime risks of nerve damage in people living with #type2diabetes The brand-new trial, known as OCEANIC, will build on recent evidence that shows that intensive management of blood glucose (sugar) levels can prevent the progression of nerve damage in people with type 1 diabetes. The trial will take advantage of smart technologies that help track body fat percentage and glucose levels in real time as well as offer patients a package of intensive lifestyle support to help manage risk factors. It is being funded by an investment from global pharmaceutical company Viatris and consumer electronics company Withings. Around half of people with diabetes suffer with nerve damage (also known as diabetic peripheral neuropathy) caused by high blood glucose levels injuring nerves over time. This can result in loss of sensation (numbness) while also causing severe, disabling nerve pain in the feet and legs. The condition – which is one of the most devastating complications of diabetes – leaves sufferers with the inability to perceive sensation putting them at greater risk of inadvertent injuries, and foot ulcers that can become infected leading to amputations. Professor Solomon Tesfaye, who is leading the trial, said: "Sheffield has world-leading expertise in diabetes research, and through this trial we hope to demonstrate the importance of early identification of diabetes-related nerve damage and how intensive management of risk factors can reverse the terrible consequences of this major complication of diabetes." Diabetes patient Tracey Smythe, 55, of Parsons Cross, whose diabetes-related nerve damage is too advanced to be reversed, said she hoped the new trial can make a difference to others like her in the future. "My quality of life is very poor and very limited, but if it can be diagnosed early and reversed people like me will be able to have the quality of life that I can't." Read more about this important study at: https://lnkd.in/dKZDth-h The study is open to patients aged 18 to 75 identified as having early-stage diabetes-related nerve damage. Contact Dr M. Shaan Goonoo on 0114 2712568 / 07564669525 or email [email protected] if you are interested in taking part. #diabetes #diabeticneuropathy #type2diabetes
