I am proud to have represented Serco at the Submarine Institute of Australia’s 12th Biennial Conference in Canberra yesterday. I had the privilege of sharing insights on the urgent need for innovative workforce solutions in the Australian submarine community—an area that is more critical than ever as we embark on our nuclear-powered submarine mission. During my presentation, I addressed the significant workforce mobilisation underway and the need for a collaborative approach to develop an agile, skilled workforce. Drawing from lessons in the US and UK nuclear submarine programs, I discussed how we can create a tailored workforce framework to meet the demands of the AUKUS agreement, while fostering an institutional culture of safety. As a longstanding advisor across government and defence, I highlighted how partnerships with industry leaders like Serco can enhance training and create a truly integrated national workforce for Australia’s defence future. The discussions were robust, and it was an incredible opportunity to connect with industry leaders and policymakers who are equally committed to shaping the future of Australia’s defence capabilities. We’re thrilled to announce that our very own Mike Tembo has won a prestigious Evenfields Black Talent Award, taking home the individual award for Transport, Logistics, Supply Chain and Facilities Management – a fantastic achievement! Mike’s journey with Serco has been marked by his incredible resilience and determination, and throughout his life, he’s overcome personal and professional challenges with unwavering dedication. Mike joined us back in the summer of 2015 as a Revenue Manager for our London Cycle Hire scheme. He quickly recognised Serco’s commitment to inclusivity and knew he wanted to build his career here. In his own words: 🎙️ “Serco is an organisation where you can truly bring yourself to work and be who you want to be. I wanted to stay a part of that.” After a contract change in 2017, Mike successfully transitioned to a Finance Business Partner role. Throughout his time with us, he’s been a key member of our race and ethnicity employee network, Embrace. Mike shared: 🎙️ “I’m so proud of what the networks have achieved over the last five years. There’s always room for improvement, but that’s always the case, and I think we can handle that!” On receiving his award, Mike said he was genuinely surprised. With over 40 years of experience in both government and industry, Karounos is a distinguished authority on managing complex defence programs and is committed to shaping the future of Australia’s nuclear-powered submarine capabilities and the integrated civil-military-industry team required for generating creditable deterrence. During his presentation, titled “Building and sustaining a workforce for Australia’s future Nuclear-Powered Submarine mission,” Karounos will highlight the unprecedented workforce mobilisation currently underway in Australia. He emphasises the critical requirement for a collaborative approach to develop a modern, agile workforce equipped with the right skills to meet the demands of the AUKUS agreement and instilling the critical institutional cultural safety mindset. “The Australian submarine community stands at a pivotal moment, facing the challenge of delivering on our nuclear-powered submarine ambitions,” Karounos stated. “By leveraging historical lessons from US and UK nuclear submarine programs, we can create a tailored workforce framework that aligns with our unique strengths and challenges.” For more than 40 years, Serco has offered world-class engineering, acquisition, logistics, financial, program management, and executive-level strategic planning solutions and services to US Navy Acquisition and In-Service Submarine Programs.
