When Dr Brian Hoeflinger's 18-year-old son died in a car accident in 2013, a part of him died. However, he says a new part was born too. Dr Hoeflinger set a goal to achieve great things in life that his son would no longer have the chance to do. His youngest son, Kevin, felt much the same since his brother died. Dr Hoeflinger said: "We have spoken extensively about wanting to challenge ourselves physically and mentally. Furthermore, I wanted to do something beyond my everyday life as a neurosurgeon. We were searching for a challenge that seemed impossible to us. Climbing the nearly 20,000 feet below-freezing, snow-covered peaks of Mount Kilimanjaro was what we landed on." And so, Dr Hoeflinger and Kevin committed to climbing Mount Kilimanjaro. Their challenge is fast approaching as they will be leaving on September 6. SameYou is working with Big Issue Recruit to help brain injury survivors and carers cope with the often overwhelming prospect of returning to work after trauma by providing job coaches to help with the hiring and settling in process. 61% of respondents to a survey polled by the organisations said they would have benefitted from a job coach to ease their return to work and as many as one in five survivors rated the support they received from their workplace after returning as ‘poor’. Shak Dean, a job coach at Big Issue Recruit, said: “It’s about understanding someone’s story and understanding what the boundaries are preventing them from moving on and actually having the life they want. “We have a conversation, go through steps and actions to see what is going on and where are they at. From there, we look at how we can help them navigate this and get them into employment, education, or whatever it might be. It’s not the same for any two people.” Find out how you can support the initiative here: https://loom.ly/9w_3ge0 #SameYouCharity #ReturnToWork #TheBigIssue

Anne-Mie shares the importance of receiving adequate rehabilitation from the start. In her story, she explains how she wished she had met with a medical professional right after the immediate emergency, to plan for rehabilitation, support and resources. "The focus of my neurologists and ophthalmologists has been on diagnosing and treating the stroke and torn artery, but how to deal with the fatigue and the vision loss and their implications - personal and professional - has been left mostly to me." We are proud to welcome our new SameYou Ambassador, Scott Pearshouse. In 2011, Scott suffered a traumatic brain injury after falling from 40ft. Along with the brain injury, he also fractured his cheek bones, had multiple cracked ribs, a punctured lung, a broken hand and a fractured coccyx. When he was admitted to hospital, he was put in an induced coma and his parents and girlfriend were told that if he survived, he would be in an inpatient facility for at least two years. 13 years on, Scott is now married to Hayley and they have a daughter together. Scott studied part-time to become a Chartered Quantity Surveyor and achieved a professional membership Chartership. He is also a mental health Ambassador for LionHeart, a charity that supports surveyors and their families in times of need. YARNS Transitions (Young Adults Rehabilitation experiences and Needs following Stroke) is a project run by The University of Edinburgh working to develop a nurse-led, holistic, neurological rehabilitation intervention which supports the psychosocial rehabilitation and survivorship of young adults following an Acquired Brain Injury (ABI). The university is looking for young adults who have experienced a brain injury or carers for young adults with a brain injury. YARNS Transitions is working to develop rehabilitation approaches using the expertise of those with brain injury. This will provide nurses with ways to support and enable young people (18-45) who have experienced a brain injury to progress and adapt through their rehabilitation journey and move on with their lives. SameYou launched a major new partnership with the Big Issue at an event in Parliament to help support brain injury survivors and their carers return to work – and outlined the stark challenges. Kate Kelly, an Occupational Therapist at University College London Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, told the event that patients often say their disabilities are poorly understood by their employers. “A lot of our patients, when we see them in the acute phase, and in the chronic phase, one of their biggest goals is about returning to work. "The benefits of working are actually huge. It improves your quality of life, productivity and reduces the risk of depression.” SameYou is working with Big Issue Recruit which aims to help survivors and carers cope with the often overwhelming prospect of returning to work after trauma by providing job coaches to help with the hiring and settling in process.
