Grace was teaching in Rarotonga when she began to feel unwell. She flew back to New Zealand right before the border closed during the pandemic. Not long after, she began to have seizures and was put into an induced coma. She was later diagnosed with Listeria Encephalitis. Four years on, rehab is her full-time job. By sharing her story, she hopes to educate others about disability and the daily challenge it represents. Jenny Clarke MBE, CEO of SameYou, has praised the NHS team in Lancashire and South Cumbria after being shortlisted for an award for its work delivering online recovery service, neurorehabilitation online (NROL). NROL was originally piloted by SameYou and University College London during the pandemic when brain injury survivors were being discharged from acute care prematurely to free up bed spaces, and was later implemented by the NHS team. Physiotherapists, occupational therapists, psychologists, speech and language therapists and medical and assistant practitioners provide cognitive and physical support to help patients to continue their recovery in their homes. Jenny said: “From day one, the results of NROL have been astonishing. We are so thrilled it has been shortlisted for this award, which recognises the huge importance of an extra layer of support for survivors after brain injury - which we know is clearly missing. “We want to thank the incredible team who deliver NROL, who have already changed the lives of so many survivors in desperate need of support.” See full story: https://loom.ly/JbsShuI #NROL #SameYouCharity #BrainInjuryRecovery

Today is #WorldMindfulnessDay ☺️ World Mindfulness Day is a reminder to pause, breathe and appreciate the present moment. Mindfulness helps us to reduce stress, enhance mental wellbeing and live more fully. In recognition of this day, and of the challenges encountered during brain injury recovery, we are sharing a lovely handwritten note from SameYou Advocate, Faith. She says: "Be patient with yourself as you learn to prioritize your emotional and mental health. You are acquiring a new life skill and that takes time." Leave a comment to tell us how you include mindfulness as part of your daily routine 🧡 #SameYouCharity #SameYouAmbassador @fleurdelisspeaks

University of Oxford’s researchers are looking for participants for a study to understand how sleep affects recovery. The team is seeking stroke survivors who experience sleep problems and have some difficulties using their hand or arm, with some ability to open and close their hand. The study, for people over 18, involves completing the programme at home as well as filling out some questionnaires, performing a movement learning task and wearing an activity monitor to measure sleep at home. No travel to Oxford is required. All volunteers will be given access to the sleep programme and all study materials will be delivered or posted to your home. The researchers hope the results of the study will help them to better treat sleep problems after stroke and to develop new treatments to improve rehabilitation outcomes. A pioneering online rehabilitation service that was piloted by SameYou and University College London during the pandemic when brain injury survivors were being discharged from acute care prematurely, has been shortlisted for a national award. The Chief Allied Health Professions Officer (CAHPO) Awards celebrate the delivery of exceptional care to patients and the Neurorehabilitation Online Team (NROL) is one of just five finalists in the Digital Practice category. The team from East Lancashire Hospitals NHS Trust, which later implemented the programme, use online video sessions to provide group specialist neurorehabilitation for people in Lancashire and South Cumbria living with brain injuries or stroke.
