Autumn Budget—as 'frightening' as feared? As we digest Chancellor Rachel Reeves’ announcements from yesterday, this Halloween, partner James Cook unpicks the ‘scary’ and ‘not-so-scary’ details and the potential impact on the private wealth sector. The Chancellor’s Budget landed some heavy blows on higher earners and investors. While VAT and income tax remain steady (a ‘not-so-scary’ relief for many), businesses face a 1.2% National Insurance (NI) hike. Capital Gains Tax (CGT) and Inheritance Tax (IHT) are set to increase. The abolition of the non-dom regime may also bring far-reaching changes for those with overseas wealth. "The Chancellor’s time at the despatch box mirrored the Prime Minister’s sentiments that those with the broadest shoulders should bear the largest burden—but we now have some clarity over what this Government deems ‘broad shoulders’ to mean."
