RUSI NextGen

As a member of the RUSI NextGen community and a student member of the Royal United Services Institute, I was recently able to attend a talk by Admiral Keith Blount, the Deputy Supreme Allied Commander in Europe, currently the most senior UK officer in NATO. The talk itself was fascinating, as Sir Keith Blount described the impact of Russia's invasion of Ukraine on NATO and highlighted the adaptation required to ensure continued "collective deterrence". This talk further increased my interest in the defence and security industries as the role of technology was heavily emphasised - with specific reference to the Defence Innovation Accelerator for the North Atlantic (DIANA) which aims to find technologies to help aid defence and security. I am greatly looking forward to attending more lectures and events available to me through the Royal United Services Institute - including a talk focused on the role of Air Power by RAF Air Chief Marshal Sir Richard Knighton. 💶 Last month, researchers from Organised Crime and Policing at RUSI attended and presented at the 21st plenary session of the Action Group against Money Laundering in Central Africa (GABAC) in Libreville, Gabon. Joining a variety of regional public sector stakeholders as well as key private, NGO and IGO partners, the weeklong event focused on steps taken by member states to enhance their response to money laundering and terrorist finance. 🤝 RUSI's Elijah Glantz presented the findings of RUSI’s ongoing research into illicit financial flows and the illegal wildlife trade (IWT) in Central Africa. The research, facilitated by Romain Esmenjaud and with input from all seven member states’ Financial Intelligence Units (FIUs), provides insights into FIUs' self-assessed strengths and weaknesses. The research highlights the pressing need for greater inter-agency, inter-sector and international co-operation to turn recent legislative progress into concrete successes in real-world financial investigations on IWT cases. 🐘 The GABAC-endorsed project findings and dissemination form part of RUSI’s multi-year project entitled ‘Combatting the Illegal Wildlife Trade in West and Central Africa: Phase II’, funded by Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH. Following the screening, our expert panel featuring Natia Seskuria, Callum Fraser, Nigel Gould-Davies, chaired by RUSI Deputy Director Malcolm Chalmers discussed Alexei Navalny’s controversial legacy in detail. The panel examined Navalny’s imperialistic views on Ukraine and Georgia, the future of the opposition in Russia and the strength of propaganda in the region.
